Gulet cruising is one of the most popular activities that holidaymakers can enjoy while exploring the temptations of the Turkish Riviera. It is no exaggeration to say that they are to Turkey what the Gondola is to Venice or the Tram is to Melbourne. The modern industry of the Gulet cruise has evolved to perfectly exploit the beauties of Turkey’s Aegean coastline, providing visitors with unforgettable views of a uniquely attractive country; an ideal opportunity to enjoy the warm waters and secluded coves of this breathtaking region. But what makes a Gulet a Gulet?

A Gulet is an all-wooden motor-powered sailing yacht that is famed for providing the zenith of luxury. Though primarily motor-powered they often boast tall sails as a secondary, and quieter, means of propulsion. Opulently designed to be both pleasing to the eye and appealing to the needs of the discerning traveller, they are a product of a maritime heritage that is second to none. From the Classical era through to the Ottoman Empire and beyond, the Turkish region has been famous for the quality of its craftsmen and the handsomeness of its ships. The Gulet is the modern representation of this tradition.

The name ‘Gulet’ is thought to come from the French word ‘Golette’ (meaning ‘Schooner’), although it may equally be an adaptation of the Venetian word ‘Galiota’ (meaning ‘Galleon’). As with much linguistic history there are many theories, but nothing is certain. What is certain is the form of the modern vessel that you will enjoy on a Gulet cruise.

Built with a wide, flat deck, a large, round stern, two-masts and strong, square sails, the Gulet is the definite pleasure boat and a unique treat to enjoy on your holidays in Turkey. Many, quite accurately, describe them as small hotels that float upon the sea. Large Gulets take from nine months to a couple of years to be completed, with the majority being completed within roughly twelve months. Costs can range anywhere from €100,000 for a simple 15m boat to up to €1million for the most impressive examples. Some boatyards use steel or fiberglass for the hulls, but the main building material is still local Pine. Found in three varieties: white, red and black, the latter two are preferable for their solidness as a building material. Once in the water, a properly maintained Gulet can last for up to 30 years. Each winter most boats are taken out of the water and kept in dry, mild conditions to prevent unnecessary ageing of the hull.

A Gulet cruise is typically arranged on a charter basis and can operate for any length of time you desire, from a single day to a week or longer. Facilities often include cushioned lounge areas, libraries, private cabins, air conditioning, sun decks, a main cabin containing the dining table and bar, and all presented in impressive mahogany and burnished brass. What’s best is that you’re more than likely to be accompanied by a friendly, energetic and experienced local crew to share the charm of the local region with you.

So what on earth are you waiting for?
