There are a lot of key components to a successful online business, but whenever someone tries to ask me what's the most important part of my sales process, they suggest that maybe it's my sales letter's headline, or the call to action, or communicating with my list, or using specific images certain ways, and I say "Nay! It is none of the above."

I tell them that split testing is the most important part of my business by far. That's how I find out what's an effective headline, or where images work best, or what my mailing list likes and doesn't like. I test, and then when I'm done testing, I make sure to test some more.

I know it sounds daunting to a lot of people, especially if you're new to internet business, but the truth of the matter is that if you don't test properly, then you'll never know if your marketing is working to the best of its abilities. You just simply won't.

It is extremely unlikely that you'll choose the perfect headline or sub-headline off the top of your head on the first go. And why bother guessing at it anyway?

So you have to test if you want to be successful, which I'm assuming you do.

And it's gotten so easy to do nowadays, that there's really no excuse for not doing it, other than being pathetically lazy.

But that's not you. You want to succeed, and you can if you approach your business the right way, and start split testing right from the beginning.

There's a free tool in your Adwords account called Website Optimizer. It's the best place to start fulfilling your various split testing needs. And did I mention it's free? There is other split testing software out there that can do the job for you very well, but I recommend starting with Google and looking into the others later on.

They have very good tutorials to get you going. Check it out and start with a simple split test on one part of your landing page, for example your headline. Add a second headline into Website Optimizer and let it run for a while. It'll take care of everything from there and it will let you know when it has enough information to declare a winner.

Then take the winning headline and test it against yet another headline until you have another winner. Keep doing this until you have the headline that gets you the most possible conversions. And once you have that, test it again.

As you start to get comfortable with it, you can start adding different parts of your landing page to the test. Test different sub-headlines, different images, different places for images, different bullet points, different calls to action, and so on. You can test as many different items as you like. The sky's the limit.

And that's just your landing page. You can also split up your email list into groups and send out different messages to each, testing different email copy and different subject lines. You can also test different price points for your products. You can even test different products altogether.

It's the only way to be sure that you're maximizing the profit potential of every campaign, and making the most of every opportunity that you have with every visitor that you've worked so hard to get to your website in the first place.

And since you can automate the whole thing, it's gotten easier to do than ever.

And if you do it right, You can almost guarantee your own success.
