The 1000 Guineas raced over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket Racecourse, has been around for nearly 200 years. It was first run in 1814 and has continued to be one of the most avidly followed races of the British flat season and makes up the first leg, together with the male counterpart, the 2000 Guineas. Over the years it has produced some of the best 3 year old fillies ever seen, including Oh So Sharp, Pebbles and more recently Finsceal Beo.

The race takes place on 3rd May which is the second day of the Newmarket Guineas Festival. It was won in 2008 by the French trained, flying filly, Natagora.

This year, the race may have more runners than usual and should go a long way into confirming that the John Gosden trained, Rainbow View is everything she appeared to be last season as a two year old, when she won four from four in very impressive style, which included the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot. She is currently clear favourite to win the 1000 Guineas, but the outcome may not be quite so comfortable as some think.

One of her possible challengers will be Luca Cumani’s Fantasia, who although not certain to run will have come on leaps and bounds over the winter. Cumani rates her as highly as his 2002 Irish 1000 Guineas winner, Gossamer. She met Rainbow View in the ‘Fillies Mile’ at the end of last season and was decisively beaten, but Cumani believes she can turn the tables, provided her new owner George Strawbridge allows her to run. The difficulty lies in the fact that Strawbridge also owns Rainbow View and might not want the two to meet again so early in the new season. Fantasia will take her place in the Nell Gwynne Stakes laster this month.

Trainer Rae Guest is very optimistic about his unbeaten filly, Serious Attitude. She came through her first season unbeaten in three starts, including the Group One, Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. She will go to Newmarket fresh, with Guest suggesting that the Guineas comes early enough in the season and he will be happy to put her through her paces on the gallops.

The Head family from France are highly likely to run their top filly, Proportional in the race. She was the winner of the Group One, Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp on Arc day and provided she comes to hand she is likely to take her chance and based upon the French have a terrific record in this race, this filly should have a great chance.

The Irish challenge is likely to be led by the Jim Bolger trained Cuis Ghaire. She was one of the early antepost favourites for the race following three straight wins as a juvenile. However, two defeats seemed to dampen the interest in her as a potential winner. Bolger nonetheless is confident that she will be back on track in time for the race and that she should not be ignored. He also has Maoineach as a possible contender, she was the very impressive winner of the recent Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial but Bolger remains steadfast claiming that Cuis Ghaire is his number one for the race.

The Guineas signals the start of what is a fantastic season of top class thoroughbred racing in the UK, Ireland and France and the objective is for the horse that wins the Guineas to go on to win the same named races on either side of the English Channel and Irish Sea.
