Do you own more than you can fit in your apartment or house? Maybe you want to keep valuable heirlooms safe and out of the way. Self storage units are a great option for anyone hoping to free up space in their homes and protect their most valued possessions. Here are some great tips for choosing a storage facility that meets your needs and gives you peace of mind that the things you own will be kept safe.

The best way to see if a storage facility meets your needs and expectations is to visit the place in person. If you can’t visit, it is a good idea to talk to someone on the phone and make sure they answer each question you have thoroughly. Remember, you will trust the storage company to keep your things safe, you can never ask too many questions.

What to look for when choosing a storage facility

Does the facility look well cared for? When you visit the storage unit, check to see if the property and the unit itself are kept clean, void of graffiti and vandalism and clear of rodents as well as overgrown grass and shrubbery. The perimeter around the unit should not have anything that stands in the way or acts as cover for burglars or vandals.

Have security measures been taken to protect your storage unit? Make sure the unit you choose is in a well lit area. Having a security fence surrounding the property is also an advantage. Check to see if the grounds are monitored by security cameras and if there is someone on duty 24/7 watching the area. Another important point is to check on the measures the storage company takes when granting access to the storage facility. Do visitors need to provide identification before entering their unit? Can people access units during a certain period in the day?

What to ask the storage facility company

Sometimes, you can’t make it to the storage unit to inspect it yourself. In this case, it helps to get an idea of the history of the company and its property. Along with requesting pictures of an empty unit, these are some important questions to ask before choosing a storage facility.

How secure is the property? Make sure the company takes the proper measures to provide a secure environment for the items you plan on putting in storage. Ask about their security system, smoke alarms and sprinkler systems, and if the grounds are patrolled by security guards. Inquire about the area the facility is in and the crime rate of that community. It is also a good idea to take note of whether or not the property is inspected often.

How are you expected to pay? Ask about the payments plan and forms of payment the facility accepts. Do you pay annually or on a month to month basis and how much notice does the company need before you move your stuff in to or out of the facility?

Whether you visit the storage facility or ask questions over the phone, the storage company you choose should be knowledgeable, courteous and willing to answer all of your questions. A reputable storage company will take the necessary steps to make sure that the items you put into storage will be safe, secure and protected.
