Everyone that has a weight problem probably thinks about this at least once. Can Food Burn Fat? There are many theories about negative calorie food and how they can help you. It is doubtful though, that food can really burn fat. If only it was that easy, no one would have a weight problem!

1. What are these so-called negative calorie foods?

Well, the first thing we need to remember is there cannot really be a "negative" calorie food. All foods contain calories, some more than others. The theory about negative calorie foods is that these foods contain so little calories, that it uses more calories to digest than it supplies and thus making it "negative." So, does food burn fat for real? No, not really, but eating a lot of these foods do help with weight loss and slimming down.

As a matter of fact, there are not really that many foods that uses more energy to digest than it supplies, but if you take into account that your body still needs to keep up the other functions while it is digesting this food, then it can be said that it is a "negative" calorie food. Take lettuce, for example. It definitely does not supply enough energy to supply your body's needs to digest it and keep up the other vital functions.

So, if you are wondering, can food burn fat? The answer is no, but it can assist you in getting rid of a few extra pounds. As most of these so-called "negative" calorie foods are fruit and vegetables, you have the added benefit that they are good for you. You cannot eat only that, though, as it does not supply in all your body's needs. It is vital to protein as well for healthy muscles.

It is very important when you look at these foods to keep in mind that they are only an aid, a help in the process. You still have to eat a healthy balanced diet that includes all the food groups. Use these foods wisely and you will greatly benefit from them. Abuse them and you will pay the price!

2. "Negative" calorie food list:

Apples, asparagus, beets, blueberries, broccoli, cantaloupes, carrot, cauliflower, celery stalk, celery root, cranberries, cucumbers, eggplant, endives, garden cress, garlic, grapefruit, green beans, green cabbage, Lamb's lettuce, Lemons, Lettuce, Onions, Papayas, Pineapples, prunes, radishes, raspberries, spinach, strawberries, tangerines, tomatoes, turnips, zucchini.

So, although it is not true that food burn fat, these are as close as you are going to get. Include them in your healthy eating plan and they will help you. An added benefit is that they are filling and will go a long way to help you by staving off the worst hunger pains.

Keep in mind that the green and green leafy veggies also supply your body with much needed calcium and you have all the reason in the world to really tuck into them. It does not mean though that it is a good idea to cut out all dairy. Use fat free yogurt as dressings and in your cooking to keep these veggies "negative" as it is so easy to add calories with your cooking methods. Steam your veggies and flavor them with herbs and spices. If you cover your cauliflower with a cheese sauce, it is most definitely not a "negative" calorie food any more and it will not longer be a food that burns fat!

In conclusion, can food burn fat? No, but the list above comes very close to it. Use the list wisely and benefit from it.
