How I Write Effective Subject Lines to Get My Emails Opened

The fact is your email means absolutely nothing if you can't get people to open it up and read the information or sales pitch you provide. You can have the best piece of copy written by an A List copywriter but if the recipient deletes the message before reading you have wasted all your time and money. In order to have an effective email you must have an enticing subject line. There are two keys to writing subject lines that almost force your lead to open your email messages.

The first key is to make the subject line enticing. The best way to do this is to give the reader a view of the end result. I used this same technique with the headline of the article you are reading. This article is about writing emails. Doesn't it make sense that a person who wants to learn how to write emails would be interested in getting them opened?

The headline gave a hint of what you would get out of reading the article. Always give the reader a view of the end result they can expect from reading the email. Every time an email arrives in an inbox the person receiving the message wants to know what is it in for them? What will I get out of reading this message? You can dramatically increase your open rate by letting the reader know it is in their best interest to read the message instead of deleting it.

Key number two is show them that the result can be achieved. Nothing speaks louder than personal results because people don't want to break new ground. They want to follow in the foot steps of someone who is already successful. Notice the headline of this article again. It implies you can learn how to get emails opened just like I do, you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

I'm giving you tips that are already proven to work and answering the question of how to get emails opened. When people see a result they always want to know "how did you do that?" Think about it. You see a friend who has lost 20 pounds and the first thing you ask is "how did you do it?" Or if your neighbor has a great looking lawn you ask, "how did you get it so green?" People will open a message if they think they will get their question answered.

When you are constructing an email subject line or a headline of any kind you must address station WIIFM. This stands for What's In It For Me. People are interested in themselves and they will only be interested in you and your mailings if you show them the potential results they can expect. If they think reading the email is worth their while they will open it to see.

The hardest part of an effective email campaign is developing the subject lines that will get the message opened. In just a few words you need to paint a picture for the reader of the benefits to be enjoyed by opening the message. If you can put a little fear of loss in there as well that is all the better.
