Sales incentives are important motivator in business. These can rev up your business sales for as high as 20% or more. But in order to reap high increase in sales, the incentive scheme should be properly designed and well executed. You have to carefully set a concise goal. Perhaps, you want to generate new accounts, launch new products or expand your sales territory.

New businessmen would wonder how sales incentives become very effective. There’s only one secret to that. Sales incentives appeal to a true sales person’s instinct. These include the need for competition, for employees to be recognized for a job well done, to have their ego hit, and finally to gain rewards for doing what they love to do. It is all about the assurance that a business contractor can actually increase his sales. And there are more reasons behind the effectiveness of sales incentives. They are as follow:

• Rewards. Employees wish to be rewarded in the efforts they do. So business contractors give them rewards through sales incentives.

• Motivation. Businessmen motivate their employees by giving up something for rewards. It is one way of motivating them to work harder to gain something in return.

• Competition. Competition can trigger everyone in your business to join the sales incentive program. You can post an update for a running list of employees so everyone can check their status. But it is also good that you offer prizes for the highest rater and also the ones next to him.

No one likes to become a loser in any competition. Just the same, employees strive harder in their job when there is competition. So they tend to encourage one another to be more competitive, and that would mean a more challenging competition to win as well as a much improved performance at work.

• Budget. Another important part of sales incentive program is budget. The budget should be in between 1.5% to 10% of the projected sales increase. This should cover everything, such as promotions, awards and luncheon.

While all these reasons can justify positive results on sales incentives program, the duration for this program should only last for a short time because training and regular employees are best motivated when something is fresh and fast. Incentives that are quickly rewarded are a good reinforcement for employees to initiate more in winning the rewards.

Working as a contractor will require you to study every little detail of your business. Since you already decided to use sales incentives as your reinforcement method, the next step is to determine what incentive to give. The most common reward is in the form of cash. But the only problem with cash is that people can easily forget the program after they deposit the cash into their bank account. The most effective incentive is to take a winning team on a vacation, which can also be a way for team building. But that would mean more expenses, so most companies prefer to give quality merchandise as incentives.
