Getting Your Figure Back After Child Birth

Nine months is a long time to have to carry a baby around. If you are feeling unattractive and out of shape after giving birth, then you are definitely not alone. Most women gain at least 30 pounds while pregnant. There are a select few that only gain a couple of pounds, but those are very rare. For those of you who feel as if they are struggling to get those pesky pounds off from being pregnant, there is hope.

First, let's shed some light on why women gain weight while pregnant. First of all, there is a growing baby inside of you that needs nutrients. This causes you to become hungry in order to seek out those necessary nutrients that help the baby grow. On top of that, your body is lacking energy from feeding a growing baby, causing you to become even hungrier. Gaining some weight while pregnant is healthy and necessary and perfectly natural. Some women might accidentally overeat when pregnant causing them to gain an excess of unnecessary pounds. This is very common, but the end result is never good. First time mothers are usually the most shocked when they realize that their baby fat does not go away upon giving birth. The reality of it is disheartening, but the truth is that you can get your figure back after giving birth, and here is how:

1. Breastfeed - mother Nature did not give women this gift by accident, it really does help when you are trying to get your figure back. Breastfeeding can burn up to an extra 650 calories per day. When you do the math, it only takes 3500 calories to gain a pound. If you are losing more than that per week, then you are definitely losing weight.

2. Exercise - When your doctor gives you the okay, start an exercise program. You do not need to expect to be able to walk 3 miles your first day, but do be reasonable. Make sure that you are healed before trying anything tedious. Start off with about 1/2 of a mile each day until you feel that you can do more. Make sure to drink plenty of water before during and after.

3. Watch your portions - Eating after giving birth is completely different depending on whether or not you are breastfeeding. If you are going to breastfeed afterwards, then you may go ahead and consume up to 500 more calories per day. If you are not, then it is time to return to normal. Space out your meals by 2 to 3 hours and make your portions small. Look at it as eating 6 snacks per day. But let them be very nutritious snacks. By spacing your meals this way and portioning them smaller, you will be able to stay fuller and not overeat, which will inevitably lead to more weight loss.

If you follow these 3 simple tips, you are going to see some changes in your figure. Do not forget to bump up your exercise routine a bit when your body feels ready for it. If you have just had your baby, make sure to consult with your physician before beginning anything new. It also helps to be certain that you are doing what is best for your body when it comes to weight loss. Other than that, losing weight should not be difficult if you give it your best shot and stick with it.
