An affiliate marketer markets a product and in return the affiliate receives a portion of the profits from the sales. As an affiliate you are paid 100% on commission. If you sell nothing you earn nothing. There are many being very successful as online affiliates and making a lot of money. Others never get off the ground. Avoid these mistakes and you will be on the path to success.

Marketing a Product You are Not Familiar With
This may seem like a given but this is a very common problem. You must actually buy, use, review and feel very comfortable with a product. After you have used it and feel like it is a great product then you can go about marketing the product. Some marketers don't see this as necessary. They assume that they know how to write an add so knowing the product is secondary.

If you really like something then you are going to feel good about passing it on to other people. Think about how a friend referred you to a product. The product met a specific need and your friend was happy to share the information with you. Though marketing techniques are more complex then this the same principle applies. Choose a product you like and selling it will be easy.

Choose a Product in an Area of Interest for You
You may be one of those natural sales people who can sell anything but most of us are not. Selling is daunting for us. If you choose a product that is related to one of your interests then you will enjoy the research and chat involved with the product marketing.

For example: if you like dogs, then you may want to look at dog products. You will like hanging around in the dog blogs and looking at dog web sites. All of us commonly surf the web reading and watching things that are of interest to us. You can incorporate your marketing into what you already enjoy doing.

Marketing too Many Products at a Time
Marketers also attempt to market many products at the same time. The danger is that they never fully research or understand the products that they are marketing. Too many balls in the air and too much on your plate will just lead to being overwhelmed with frustration.

You also will be spending too much money on marketing that isn't working. As you become a more experienced marketer you will be able to handle several products at once. Start out with one or two and work toward more.

Jumping in Without Fully Understanding all Aspects of Marketing
Marketing online is like any other business. There is a learning curve. You need to invest time in learning the ropes. Invest in some training or a club where you can hone your skills. Affiliate marketing is simple and strait forward but it does require consistent new training as the market changes.

Selling Your Integrity for a Few Bucks
How much is your integrity worth? I am a firm believer in God, karma and good sense. You may make a few dollars off a marginal product but you are not going to feel good about yourself. Life has a way of rewarding you accordingly. Just ask the CEOs and Wall Street fat cats what their years of deception have gotten them. Focus on high quality products that you can feel really good about. You will respect yourself and at the end of the day that is more important then a few dollars.

Avoid these pitfalls and you will be on your way to success as an affiliate marketer.
