Before you venture into technicalities or strategies you must first have a niche to your online business. It is a tried and true saying, ‘love what you do and do what you love’. Finding your online business niche goes hand in hand with that saying. So how do you find your niche?

Step 1: Understanding the Concept of a Niche

A niche by definition is a situation or activity that is suited to interests, abilities or nature. Applying this definition to finding a marketable business niche is simply a business addressing the needs for a product or service catered to a specific interest, ability or nature.

A niche should also be focused. Having an online business focused on sports may be too broad to not get scattered and lost on your own concept. Instead of focusing on just sports, maybe focus on sports Hall of Fames, maybe even more specifically Baseball Hall of Fame. The focus allows for better construction mapping.

Now the concept is underway, the first thing that jumps into your mind may not be what you finally decide on doing. Your life’s passion may be to collect cereal flakes shaped like state shapes. This passion may not be enough or feasible to sustain longevity. More preparation is needed to finding the right niche.

Step 2: Make Lists

An online business requires a great deal of time and effort. The business should be something that you will not only want to spend a lot of time on, but something you love spending a lot of time. Finding you niche can be accomplished by doing some brainstorming and listing.

- Make a list of your passions, things you love to do and you want to do.
- Make a list of all of the things you do well, and things people say you do well.
- Evaluate and merge the lists. Notice the common themes.
- Narrow down the list to your top five.

After your listings are complete your online business niche should start becoming apparent.

Step 3: Evaluate Your Potential Niche

Now that you have begun to narrow down your potential niche, real evaluation is necessary. Again, your passion may lie in observing cereal flakes, but you have to determine if that will translate into a successful online business. You need to focus on two points:

- Determine the potential traffic of each topic.
- Determine the potential money to be made of each topic.

How you choose your online business niche should be driven by your personal love and dedication, but also by marketability and potential revenue.

How to choose a niche for your online business can seem to be a difficult task, but can be accomplished in three key steps. Behind every step taken you should always ask yourself if you will dedicate the time into your niche, but more so want to dedicate the time to developing and growing this niche. With hard work and dedication, you too can make a good living online, and achieve success doing something you enjoy.
