In the eternal words of Huey Lewis and the News: So this is it! You have yourself a brand new cypress table, and want to get the most use of it you can over the years. You chose cypress because it is one of the hardest woods available on the market, and naturally resistant to bugs, rot, and fungus. Its also one of the cleanest renewable materials you can buy, as it never bleeds oils or sap. Having so much in an investment means you want to get the most life out of it – even if it means giving it a little reinforcement from time to time.

Purchasing a cypress table is one of the best things you can buy for your patio, as it will be guaranteed to go with everything you already have. But even with its natural resistance to everything you can throw at it, you want to make sure you are doing everything you can to protect your patio furniture from all the moisture, pests, and fungus out there. After all, it is only what your friends and family eat off of – its not like it holds any importance in your life.

Protecting your cypress table is as easy or as hard as you want to make it. It also depends on the amount of time you want to invest in making your table the best it can look. Even with an untreated, natural look, your cypress table can resist the graying and fading that comes with the elements. It all depends on where you want to go in protecting your patio picnic table.

The easy way to make sure you get the longest life out of your cypress table is to seal the wood with a wood sealant, varnish, or paint. By using either of the three, you are adding another chemically-bonded agent that adds a big layer of protection to the wood of your table. Many stains, sealants, and varnishes are reinforced with urethane, which protects the wood from everything that could possibly attack. And many paints are reinforced with many different types of compounds, which also serve as a protective barrier between the outdoors and you. This finish will protect the natural beauty and shine of the wood that can be re-accessed by simply sanding down the wood. The sealing process also helps to keep the table clean by laying down a non-stick surface, which can be cleaned by simply wiping off what may besmirch it.

If you insist on keeping the natural shine by having a non-finished cypress table, there are ways to take care of it that will provide beauty and protection for years to come. To keep its natural golden shine, use a clear, oil-based varnish to bring out the color. The varnish will be quick to take to the wood, as the cypress will accept it as its own. The varnish will not only protect your table from bugs, moisture, and the rest of the elements, but it will also protect from the graying that will occur after constant exposure in the sun.

By knowing how to take care of your cypress table, you will be taking care of an investment that will be enjoyed by all for years to come. And by knowing how each and every one works, you are investing in the care of a product that will give you years upon years of beautiful enjoyment.
