There are times when no matter how much tutoring is being taken advantage of, it just seems that it’s not working at all. While this is rare, it does occur. And when it occurs, it can be pretty discouraging for the tutor, the student, and the parent.

Of course, if tutoring is not working out too well, the last thing to do is give up. Instead, if tutoring appears to be unsuccessful, consider some alternatives that may turn the experience around for the better.

Speak to the Tutor

One of the first steps to consider when it seems that tutoring is unsuccessful is to speak with the tutor. There are a number of reasons that this step is important. First, the tutor may be completely oblivious to the issue at hand. If this is the case, it’s important that the tutor knows that something isn’t working out so that he or she may make the necessary adjustments.

Another reason to speak with the tutor is that he or she may be able to bring in some reinforcements, such as extra materials and resources to help enhance learning. And as a last resort, the tutor may be able to suggest another individual or service that may be a better fit for the student or coursework being studied.

Talk to the Student

Another very important step to take when it seems tutoring isn’t working is to communicate with the student. You may notice that your child’s grades don’t seem to be improving as promised. Before you talk to the tutor, you may want to ask your child why he or she thinks this is the case. Your child may reveal that he or she is unhappy with the tutor, or is still having difficulties thoroughly understanding the subject being studied. By communicating with the student you can gain insight into why tutoring may not be working, as well as how the situation can be altered positively to begin to see improvements.

Consider Alternative Options

A third step to consider if tutoring seems unsuccessful is looking at alternatives to the tutoring environment you have chosen. For example, if your child is working with a tutor one-on-one, you may want to consider a learning center or other group environment where your child is able to work with and become motivated by other students. This may just be the spark of interest your child needs. Also, if your child doesn’t work well in a face-to-face situation, you may want to consider online tutoring where he or she can take advantage of live chatting or email communication. This can eliminate the pressure of in-person tutoring while obtaining the same (if not better) level of help.

What’s tricky about tutoring is that often times you may not find the right match the first go round. You may have to explore a number of avenues before you pinpoint the right experience. However, once it’s found, the rewards of tutoring are unmatchable. So if you find that your current tutoring experience appears to be unsuccessful, don’t just settle; instead, take the necessary steps to create the best environment possible.
