Let’s say for the sake of argument that you are incredibly skilled in a highly sought after field. You could, I suppose, spend the rest of your career adding to the company coffers by remaining a steady and able employee.

Many have discovered that there will come a point when the company sees your longevity as a certain liability. In other words they know they can hire someone else to fill the position and it will cost them much less. In a time when pink slips are being handed out faster than prom dresses it might be a good time to consider the possibility of developing a sideline business featuring non-competing consultancy.

What you will need…

* A fully functional and highly developed website that helps answer questions and provides value added knowledge to your site guests.

* Supporting materials if you are called to provide an in-person presentation. This may include PowerPoint presentations, brochures, handouts and potentially study guides or books.

* An online sales page will be needed to help provide the reasons your expertise might be useful to a business or organization.

* A well developed and cohesive presentation that can be plugged in to a variety of settings.

In this scenario you will likely discover that your general observations can be useful in sharing with a large cross-section of clients, while your specific expertise may be useful to a specific business type. Develop content for both. The more flexible you are in presentation style the more opportunity you may have to share your skills with others.

It is entirely possible you will not lose your job. However, developing a contingency plan may help provide some piece of mind while opening an entirely new line of potential. You have valuable skills and there may be ways to capitalize on those skills in a proactive instead of reactive way.

Many corporations spend a sizable amount of money to help encourage staff members and provide new motivation to succeed. They do this through guest speakers. What you may consider ‘war stories’ may actually be just the right touch in developing a rapport that allows the audience to connect with you on a peer-to-peer basis and may open the door for continued dialogue and dramatic audience interaction.

It’s been said that all of us exist for a special reason. Perhaps yours is to help others learn skills needed to succeed in their business goals and objectives. Why? Many business owners get tired of telling their employees the same things over and over. Sometimes they just give up and allow the employees to manage on their own. However, if the encouragement comes from an outside source it can actually carry greater weight than if it is simply another memo from the boss.

Think of it this way. A wife can tell her husband (or visa versa) something they know to be true. However, that truth only seems to be accepted when someone else says it. The same it true with our growing children. Interestingly whether it’s an employee or your child the words they hear from a secondary source will seem like new information to them.

Capitalize on what you know and make it available to others. This may open many new doors of opportunity for you now – and in the future.
