Dealing with stress is one of those things that everybody has to do in life but few people know how to actually do it. As science and medicine become more and more elite they are beginning to finally recognize that the emotional state of the body has perhaps the greatest effect on the physical effect. More telling than our genealogical disposition is our ability to deal with stress in predisposing us to minor and major illness in our life.

With something this basic you would think that we would be taught how to do it right along with the learning of our ABC’s. But most of what we are taught from an early age is to somehow hide or push back our stress into the deep of our hearts in order to remain an accepted and morale person. The terrible two’s got their name because this is the age where humans are on the brink of learning that life can be stressful and there is a right and wrong way to deal with it. Since so few know the right way to deal with it, stress is not dealt with at all. In this manner, it sits like a well of untapped water in the deep of being until one day, someday and eventually it begins to sour and mildew. Then we are sick. Perhaps physically or maybe emotionally. Then we get medicated. Yet we never get rid of the stress or learn how to deal with it.

If someone told you that by dealing with stress in an effective, comprehensive and concise manner – you would be sick less often and all around more happy- would you learn how? Would you teach it to your children and would you finally look at your own health as a barometer of your stress levels? Would you make strides to change the way you react to life in order to prolong and improve your health?

Stress is making you sick. By not dealing with all the things that sadden you, make you worry or nervous, or that nag your mind – you are opening yourself up to health issues. There are thousands of ways to deal with stress and each of them is as individual as the person feeling the pain. The trick is finding what works for you and unlearning the nonsense that tells us we have to take it like a man and bury the emotions and stress that we feel.

This doesn’t mean that we can begin to rave and holler like lunatics at all the people and circumstances that annoy us. But we can decide to take control of our reaction to things in life and realize that we make a choice how we respond. For instance if you are checking out at the check out line and the clerk and the customers in front of you are complete and total morons, making mistakes and holding you up – you have a choice. You can sit back rolling your eyes, making belittling comments or throw your goods on the floor and walk off as you mumble obscenities under your breath. You are mad, furious even and you feel justified in your feeling. You are having a moment of ego and you are filling your body with stress. You are letting the situation that you had no control over get the best of you. It can take hours or even days to get over how upset you are. This experience can put you in a bad mood for the rest of the day which only means you will encounter more stress. Or, you can let it go! Yes, annoying- but worth ruining your day over- only if you decide it will be!

Everyone has a choice. For matters closer to the heart and home, same thing goes. You can sit up endless nights worrying about paying the bills but it wont make the money come in faster. In fact, if you would get the rest you need and feel some sense of calm, chances are the laws of attraction might just send a solution your way.

In every event we are apt to find ourselves dealing with stress. Life is about lots of deadlines and responsibilities and often they are too much for us to handle. People need to begin taking a good hard look at what matters most to them and finding ways to enjoy it. When you are 90, sitting in your rocking chair the lady in the check out line and the bill that took you 2 years to pay won’t really matter. But whether or not you lived your life doing what you enjoy and giving yourself and those you love happiness will! The best part is that dealing with stress often means doing just the things we enjoy most. If fishing gives you a sense of calm, go fish. If shopping or reading, watching TV or running seem to calm your nerves- then do these things! Do them every day.

Dealing with stress doesn’t mean we have to journal, see a shrink and overtly talk about our problems, it just means that we have to allow an outlet for our physical body to release the pressure. Think of yourself as the little teapot! When things get hot, take off the lid and whistle a while to the tune of whatever strikes your fancy. For others saying mantras, meditating or finding a center place of being works well. The point is it doesn’t matter what works for you. Dealing with stress is easy when you give yourself a chance to do so. Instead of burying things instead maintaining that you are supposed to be an adult blah blah blah- recognize the stress and do something about it. Allowing it to fester can and will only make you sick.

There is nothing civilized, grown up or mature about being filled with heated feelings, anger, displeasure and ugliness. All of this cause even more stress. Understanding that you always have a choice in how you react is pivotal in transiting the way you are dealing with stress. No person or situation can make you feel a certain way without you allowing it first. The time has come to take control of our lives and begin dealing with stress in ways that help us get away from it. It seems that with the medical society finally realizing the aftermath stress has n the body, humanity would take pause and listen. No doctor can cure us, medicate us or operate on us enough if we are unable or unwilling to take responsibility for our own physical and emotional well being.
