For any wedding or event, the location is everything. Whether you want a beach, outdoor or destination wedding, finding the perfect place is one of the most important decisions of the entire process. There are many things to think about when deciding on a venue, as well as when the event is to take place. Choosing a date is also important, because if you want to get married on the beach in January, the weather might not work in your favor!

A location should also be determined once you have decided how many guests will be there, especially if you want to be married in a small, cozy cabin or intimate chapel setting. How many family members will have to travel to attend the wedding? In tough economic times, many family members might not have the extra money to spend traveling across the United States, so be sure to stay realistic with your location desires. Here are three basic things to think about when choosing the location for your wedding or event location:

How many guests need to travel?
Sure, we all would love a wedding in the South of France, but is it practical for most of your friends and family? Probably not. Do many family members or friends have small children? While you can choose not to allow children to the event, that might make it harder for special guests to attend if they aren’t able to find someone to watch the kids. Are older family members unable to travel? Many grandparents don’t want to travel all over the country, and some are just unable to, so be sure to keep that in mind when you plan a location. While the wedding is all about the bride and groom, the guests are there to make special memories, so the more that come, the more special the event.

Do you want a traditional or modern ceremony?
Even in 2009, more than half the couples married each year still do so in a church. If you decide you want to get married in a religious location, choosing the date and securing the venue should be done as soon as possible to ensure the facility would be available when you want it. In addition, many churches already have décor or flowers set up at certain times of the year, so you might be able to have the church décor as part of the wedding decorations. If not, you’ll need to plan your wedding date according to when there are no festivities going on in the church.

How badly do you want a destination wedding?
If you live on the coast, having a beach wedding is simple, but if you live in the Midwest it’s not so easy to get the whole family to either side of the United States. On the other hand, if you want a very small ceremony with only close friends and family, choosing a destination wedding is much easier, and should be planned as desired. With any wedding, especially those outdoors or destination weddings, keep in mind that weather might not always cooperate, so always have a backup plan or resign yourself to take things as they come!
