Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a nick name called Chessie. They originate from Britain and they beat the Labrador in retrieving. They are really big and strong. They can retrieve even through ice as they are very tough, and they have the capacity to go for hunting even if the weather condition is very bad. They are known to catch ducks, on the Chesapeake Bay which has rough and icy waters.

The normal weight of the Chessie is around 60 to 90 pounds and the height is around 21 to 26 inches. These dogs have a magnificent look, as they are hugely built with strong bones. Their coat is actually waterproof, they sweep their neck, loins and back beautifully, and when you compare their coat to other breeds, they are kind of oily and smells of musk at times. Their normal color ranges from light brown to deep brown or in other words something similar to the color of the sedge, which again goes from yellow to faded tan. Sometimes they have nice spots on the coat. These Chesapeake’s are wonderful swimmers, because they are gifted with toes which are webbed and tough hind legs.

They are well known for their intellect and approach. They have a good sense of smell and are very affectionate. Most of the times, their happiness is mistaken to be a growl, as the Chessie usually shows his happiness through barking. Another uniqueness which this breed possesses is that, they show their front teeth and smile to show they are happy. Any other dog breed does this act in order to threat. By nature these dogs are very commanding and combative towards other dogs. And there are not extremely assertive either. When training is provided to them, they have to be taught to obey from the very early days, to make him understand that he is not the boss. If this is not done, training them at later stages would be very difficult.

This breed of dogs, usually gets very attached to one person in the house, and consider him to be the master, and thinks everybody else are inferior or equal to him, other than the master. He thinks that there is only one master, and he is the person, to whom he is well attached. When it comes to strangers, the Chessie is intense and restrained. Some of the other retrievers like the Labrador are quite friendly with strangers. This kind of behavior is mainly because they are biased to be sectional.

They are very fast in learning things and are extremely witted. You can expect what you want from these dogs; they are good at performing what the master wants. They never disappoint you. If they are trained well, they abide by the rules. They do not misbehave.

They love eating meat, with some biscuits. They can consume around 1.5 to 2.5 cans of them. They also have dog food which is rich in minerals and vitamins. These dog foods are easily available at every pet store.
