Search engine optimization (SEO) is an ongoing task. While some business owners regard it as a one-time fix for their website’s visibility, the truth is that good SEO involves constant vigilance. While SEO services are practically free once the initial optimization tasks are complete, business owners must work to maintain top rankings on the search engine results pages. Here are 4 critical factors to consider:

1. Optimizing Existing Pages. Vigilance is necessary as you consider how humans react to your content. Every time you add new content, you need to monitor how your visitors react to it. Do they spend time on pages with relevant and interesting articles, do they follow links from your articles to other information provided on your website, or do they click right back to the search engine to start over again? No matter how much traffic you’re getting to your content, it’s basically useless if your visitors don’t stick around to find out more. If you find that a large number of visitors are returning to the search engine from one of your pages, try including more information and more links to other relevant content on your site. Even if a visitor isn’t compelled by what he sees, he may be willing to give you one more try by clicking on an internal link.

In addition, you need to be aware of the need to update existing information. If you learn new information that will interest your potential customers, add that information to any relevant pages. Make sure your old content links to new articles that you may add.

The bottom line is that you simply can’t ignore your content. You need to understand how your visitors react to it, and then you need to respond accordingly.

2. New Content. Any new content must be optimized. This goes without saying. But always keep in mind that you must balance keyword usage with readability and relevance. Your ultimate aim is to create content that is relevant and interesting. Don’t load it down so heavily with keywords that it’s difficult to read. At the same time, however, keep in mind that you are trying to increase your search engine ranking. Strike the right balance and you’ll reap the rewards.

3. Algorithms. Search engines regularly change their algorithms as they devise improved ways to give search engine users the kinds of relevant results they’re searching for. Ultimately, the search engines reward user-friendly content. If you’re creating quality content, then your ranking won’t be adversely affected by a change in search engine algorithm. If you’re constantly trying the “crack the code,” however, you’ll find that you’re just chasing your tail. SEO allows you to help Google determine exactly what you’re talking about since Google isn’t always able to make the connection between your content and your product or service. But if you concentrate on writing good content, you won’t have any problems.

4. The Human Factor. Remember that you’re ultimately writing for people, not for search engines. If visitors to your site don’t find your content relevant, helpful, or compelling, then the search engines probably won’t either. Remember that search engines are trying to provide internet users with a high-quality service, and that means providing a search engine results page full of websites that are relevant to the search terms entered by the user. The search engines are looking for the same things that humans are looking for. If you provide good information, you will be rewarded with higher rankings and increased traffic to your site.
