Web site advertising has quickly become an indispensable part of any successful business plan. The Internet has changed nearly everything about how business is done; companies can do business with each other easily, regardless of their physical location and of course, consumers have access to goods and services from companies in every corner of the world, all with a click of the mouse. It's an exciting time to be in business but of course, it is also a challenging one.

While there may be a marketplace which is nearly unlimited in scope on the web, with an enormous amount of both consumers and businesses eager to deal with one another, reaching your market is as much of a challenge as ever. New media means new opportunities and new approaches to advertising, but the question of how to reach your target market remains in online advertising as in traditional media.

Naturally, web site advertising works both ways. Websites can carry advertising for your product or service, as well as being a way for website owners to produce an additional revenue stream. Buying and selling advertising on websites is a large and growing sector of the advertising industry, a sector which any business can ill afford to ignore. On one hand you have website owners whose sole purpose is to survive in a competitive marketplace and one of the easiest ways to do this is through generating revenue for their websites. It is their job to create a site which will present and offer the best user experience as well as getting people to click on ads.

If you're looking to advertise your product or service online, you'll want to find websites which appeal to the people who make up your target market. Then there is the question of placement within the page. Just as in print media, where your advert appears on a web page does influence its impact. Consumer behavior online is not necessarily the same as the way people scan a page of print - we are a society rapidly becoming used to hypertext and at least on the web, we don't read the way that we used to.

If you're a webmaster interested in maximizing the earning potential of your site, then selling advertising space on your site for advertising revenue is a wise move. You've built an audience and you know who they are - you can use this knowledge of your demographic and trade on your popularity to make a profit by selling space to advertisers with products that will appeal to your readers. It's all a matter of finding the right advertisers and knowing how to present your site.

If all of this seems like a lot to keep up with, given the pace at which the web moves, that's because it is! However, you don't need to let yourself be overwhelmed. You can and should work with advertising professionals who can help you connect with advertising partners and achieve maximum profitability, whether you are a webmaster or an advertiser.
