Though you may have chosen to work from home so that you could take care of your children yourself, there may be times when you need help. Having that already arranged can help you handle whatever situation arises without fretfulness or panic.

Many people choose to work from home to avoid the need for day care, so it may come as a surprise when they find that they still need help from time to time, and if this is unexpected, a sitter may not be close at hand. For this reason, even if you hope to never have to rely on them, it is good to have a baby sitter that you can trust, and potentially call upon at short notice.

Anyone who has children, and in fact most people who do not will be aware of the fact that they require a great deal of time and attention from you. When working from home it is normally possible to work around them, meeting their needs as they arise, whilst steadily ploughing on with your own work. But what would you do if suddenly their needs, or yours, changed?

Illness is an unfortunate fact of life when you have small children in your household, and frequently, when they get sick they need greater attention and comfort from someone they know and love. If you have to work during these times, it often happens at the expense of sleep-which is not healthy for you, and may result in a lower standard of work.

Having a grandparent or close family friend who is willing to visit at times like this can take the burden off you. Just an hour of company for your child may allow you to keep on top of your work, avoiding falling behind. Sick kids are not the biggest attraction though for even well meaning friends, so you may well be unable to get help until they are well again. By this time you might well be running behind schedule and facing the second situation in which a sitter is needed, to allow you to work.

Catching up on large amounts of work, or coping with a sudden influx of work that gets on top of you may be significantly easier with a couple of uninterrupted hours during which you can work. A sitter staying with the children can allow you to have this.

Other situations may also require help, such as needing to go dental or medical appointments where the children are unable to be present. Some work at home jobs may also require regular trips to the office or meetings via conference call with the company or with other agents in your area.

In many areas there are drop in day care centers that may be available at a high cost if no other care is available, but easier and obviously cheaper may simply be having a standing arrangement for visits with the child's loving family or friends.

Working at home may frequently mean the elimination of baby sitters and day care facilities, but occasionally situations can arise where help is still needed, and it is always better to be prepared before hand with alternative care arrangements. That way, if an emergency arises you will able to handle it with the minimum of fuss.
