One of the most important people besides the bride and groom at any wedding ceremony could arguably be the wedding photographer. The photographer is there to capture moments on one of the most special days in a person’s life, and his or her photographs will be there forever to serve as a reminder of the beautiful day. However, finding one that is ideal for what you’re looking for can take time and research. Aside from choosing the ideal photographer for the wedding or event, finding one within your certain budget is also tricky.

To stress the importance of choosing a quality photographer, just remember that this person alone will be recording moments from your wedding, and you want the best photographs or recordings possible. Despite the fact that the services of a photographer can incorporate a pricey asset to the wedding budget, shopping around and doing research for a photographer will save hundreds or thousands of dollars in the long run. Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for a wedding or event photographer:

What are you looking for in a photographer?
Photographers have their own style, and so do you. Make sure that the photographer you choose to record your special day has the same aesthetics as you or that they know what you are looking for in the result of your photos. Do you want a photographer to take creative liberty with your photographs? Communicate with them in the beginning and look at portfolios of their work to make sure that the match is well made between you and the photographer.

Book early!
Once the date and location have been set, find a photographer! These individuals are busy, and the better the reputation they have, the more clients they need to squeeze in their schedule. Some photographers are even booked up to one year in advance; so if you are looking for a specific photographer, check with availability before setting a date.

Save money with a freelance photographer:
Since there is a lot of overhead with hiring a studio photographer, you might be able to save money by hiring a freelance photographer. Some freelance photographers simply take photos at the wedding or event, and then give you the negative, which you will still need to take to a professional studio to create prints. Individuals might prefer to hold onto their negatives, since many times studios keep them in order to offer re-prints. While you still need to take the negatives to a professional studio for developing, having a freelance photographer to take the photos will charge less since they are working for themselves, and not a studio.

Use cameras as a centerpiece:
One of the most memorable and popular centerpiece ideas is placing disposable cameras at each table so the guests can take pictures for the bride and groom. Since neither the wedding party nor the photographer can be at every location at the same time, disposable cameras are perfect for getting funny or memorable pictures from family and friends.

Choosing a wedding photographer is just as important as any other facet of the wedding ceremony, so be sure to research and decide that they are the ones you want before signing a contract. Ask around with friends or family if they can refer anyone, especially if they have already had a wedding photographer that displayed professional and high quality work.
