The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) World Environment Day (WED) is commemorated yearly on 5th June. The UN General Assembly first established it in 1972. It is a day through which the United Nations endeavours to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment, and to enhance political attention and action.

A few of the fundamental aims of WED are to give a human face to environmental issues. To promote an understanding that communities around the world are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues.

The theme for World Environment Day 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change’. It’s a message that stresses the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen later in the year. This year’s WED host is Mexico-a leading partner in the UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign.

In keeping with this celebration, why not get online to findmeagift.com for a range of environmentally friendly gifts.
The Wind Up Phone and iPod Charger with Torch is an excellent Eco gift for gadget lovers. In fact for everyone, seeing as most people own a mobile phone! It is a light, robust and compact charger, which gives you instant access to extra battery power for your mobile phone or iPod, whenever you need it. Included in the Wind Up Charger pack are adapters for a huge range of mobile phones and iPod’s. The charger also doubles up as a handy Wind Up Torch. This makes it a fantastic dual gift that saves you from the stress and inconvenience that an unexpected flat battery gives you and it’s eco-friendly too!

If you, or someone you know owns a computer (which, let’s face it, covers the majority of people) then this is a neat little eco-gadget that you will all absolutely adore! The Eco Button Power Saver is a nifty little button that plugs straight into your computer. It puts your computer into an energy saving ‘eco-mode’. Whenever you wish to take a break from your computer, simply press the Eco Button (not rocket science!). This ensures that your computer only uses the same amount of power as when it is shutdown. No need to waste time closing down programs, just press and off you go! When you wish to resume working, just press any key on the keyboard. That’s not all; this cute button also records the carbon units, the power used and the money you have saved by using it. It may be small, but it sure is a big help when it comes to trying to reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills!

How about buying some carbon credits? The CO₂ Emissions Climate Relief Pack contains 100kg of carbon credits, which are purchased and retired on your behalf (from CO₂ emissions quotas from big polluting companies). Carbon credits are part of the scheme implemented by the Kyoto Treaty. The treaty aims to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions, which not only pollute but are also responsible for climate change. By buying this starter pack you are instantly guaranteed that less harmful emissions will be released into the atmosphere. This excellent eco-gift is packed with goodies, including a little book about ‘living green’, a wall chart and loads of interesting information about credits and the effect CO₂ has on our climate.

So why not join in and celebrate World Environment Day, by buying family and friends an environmentally friendly gift for their next birthday? After all, this is our world, our environment; therefore the issues concern each and every one of us. For us all to enjoy a safer and prosperous future, it is down to us all to help make the changes needed. Why not continue (or start) to help make a change with Find Me A Gift!
