So you've chosen the Shaman, and now you're looking for the talent build that will make you the best you can be, right?

Look no further, because whether you're an Alliance or Horde Shaman, I'll give you the run down on how to craft an effective build, and what each tree should be used for.

First up, what exactly are you trying to achieve?

Are you a level 10 Shaman, new to the world and not sure what build you want? Or are you a level 19 who's just getting stuck into PvP for the first time? Perhaps you're just about to start your first instance, and want a build that won't get you laughed at.

Here are my thoughts on PvE (leveling) Shamans, PvP Shamans, and Raid Shamans, and what kind of build you'll need for each.

First up, PvE (leveling) builds need to focus on a balance of damage, protection and efficiency of mana.

Most Shaman's will choose either an elemental build, or an enhancement build for their leveling, but steer clear of restoration.

You must accept that if you go resto for leveling its going to take you a long, long time to hit 80.

Advice: Choose talents based on extra damage or mana efficiency, as well as utility. Ghost wolf is a good example. If you start getting wailed on and need to flee, a quick ghost wolf and run will help you avoid corpse runs.

Forget about adding anything into totems if you can help it. Totems are for groups only and you likely won't be doing much of that for a long time.

For PvP as a Shaman I highly recommend the Elemental build. Why?

The elemental build, with a little enhancement built in is a critting machine, and great for sitting back and casting quick chain lightning spells into the fray.

Burst damage is the name of the game for PvP, so stick with Elemental and you'll do fine.

Another option is a heavy resto build with a heavy emphasis on chain heal, find big groups of your team, hang at the back and help them out with healing. Don't forget to be sneaky and use terrain to hide.

Raiding Shaman's are another resto hangout for the Shaman, and chain heal really comes out to shine.

I strongly suggest you invest heavily in ensuring your Shaman will crit chain heals as much as possible, and get your mana totems working hard too. Your group will love you for it.

Earth shield in particular is great for helping out the primary healer or tank, and you should max its related talents out.

Another talent I recommend you get is Thundering Strikes. Max it out with 5/5 points and you'll get an extra 5% crit chance - great for your healing spells. Just remember, its in the enhancement branch, not resto!

If you want to do DPS in a raid, I'd look at enhancement since your average DPS will be higher than elemental. Get all the talents you can find which back up windfury and flurry, and they'll do all the hard work for you.

At the end of the day, you generally don't need hard and fast rules for your Shaman build unless you're at the very top of the competition, or are hungry to get there.
