If you’ve recently signed up for your first SAT exam, you’re probably wondering how much time you’ll need to prepare for it. The truth is, everyone is different. Some people are naturally more comfortable with test taking than others, and thus require less preparation time. You may be one of these people. Nonetheless, it doesn’t hurt to create a preparation plan.

In order to get ready for your big day, it’s important to get organized. Let’s take a look why it’s important to prepare, as well as some ways that you can get ready for your SAT exam.

Why It’s Important to Prepare

If you already test well, you may be wondering why it’s important to prepare for the SAT exam. For one, if this is your first time taking the test, you want to have an idea of what you’re in for. You may have gone through 10, 11, or even 12 years of schooling at this point and feel that you know all about critical reading, writing and math, but if you don’t know how they will be presented, you’ll likely be lost on exam day.

Another reason that it’s important to prepare is because you want to do the best you can. Most colleges require that you score well on the SAT in order to be accepted for admission. So why not shoot for the stars? If you’re looking to get into your school of choice, it’s a good idea to not just learn how to take the test, but also how to score extremely well on it, which can be done with ample preparation completed on your part.

Creating a Study Plan

One way to ensure that you’re prepared for your exam is to create a study plan right after – or even before – you sign up for the test. Because taking the SAT is not a part of your everyday curriculum, it is a good idea to create a schedule that will help you incorporate it into your daily life temporarily. This might mean printing out a calendar so that you can note the days of the week, what time of the day, and for how many hours you will study.

Also, it’s good to select time to sort through the basics of taking the test, such as how long each section takes, as well as how the questions are structured. A great way to get a grip on all you can expect with the exam is to take practice tests, which, lucky for you, can be found online.

Online Preparation Options

The beauty of preparing for the SAT exam in this day and age is that you can do so online. Some sites offer up to 40 hours of preparation through live online sessions and practice tests. Also, some offer assistance for individual sections based on your need. With so much help to take advantage of, there’s no excuse for not getting in all of the preparation you can.

While there is still no definite timeline for preparing for the test, many would suggest that you give yourself several months of serious study time. The more seriously you take the exam, the more you’ll want to study, which will likely ensure that you are more than prepared on the big day.
