Online poker, as the name suggests, is an online game played over Internet. A large number of people using Internet play online games and poker is one of the top games played. This was not possible before the introduction of Internet and people could only play in real life situations. The number of net users playing poker online has led to immense popularity of the game. The data speaks for its self showing a rise in number of users from $82.7 million in 2001 to $2.4 billion in 2005.

Poker is generally played in casinos, which require huge overhead costs. Entry fees make the game even more exclusive. The stakes are really high at such places. Thanks to online poker the overhead costs have gone really down, as you don’t need real place, setup, human assistance, etc. There are many sites which allow you to play without any entry fee, some sites will even let you play entirely for free. Since the costs are low, low stakes are possible.

To play an online game you need to decide on the game, this could be holdem, razz,Omaha or one of the other variations. Once you have bough into a game you need to play and use your chips to bet, raise, or fold at various stages through the game. Since you cannot physically watch and study other player’s body language, you focus on the betting patterns and reaction time of the other players. To play the game minimum two players and maximum eight players are required. At certain sites ten players are entertained. The biggest plus point of such a game is that you can play anytime depending your convenience and have options to choose from. When you play online at a poker room they also have special rules in place in case of Internet disconnection in between any game allowing the player some time to return.

Many sites provide you with a calculator called “poker odds calculator” so that you can calculate your chances of winning. This calculator supports up to eight players. It flashes positive cards as green and negative cards as red.

Online sites are most vulnerable to frauds like collusion amongst players. In sites that are not verified may have security employees with access to the history of the regular players. They can ascertain a pattern behavior of regular players. Here the employee may use the position in an undesirable manner. This is also called insider cheating. In casino players can guard their cards by simply folding them in their hands but in virtual games this option is missing. Another kind of cheating may take place when members of the same family plays against each other over the net. This is a kind of open proxy. Such cheatings can be avoided by keeping a check on IP addresses of the server.

Internet poker is played in a number of currencies as the players come from all kinds of countries. Many sites however allow only U.S dollar as their common currency. Payment is generally made through credit cards.
