Summer time is fast approaching and you find yourself permitting your child to go to summer camp. You have decided that it will be an educational and cultural experience for him. But it’s his first camping trip without you. So naturally, you will feel a little bit apprehensive even if you know that the activity will be adult-supervised.

Can your child survive the outdoors without you? Is this the right time and the right age to permit him to go, or can you postpone it for another year? What if something happens, can your child take care of himself? Is your child responsible and knowledgeable enough for this type of activity? Can you trust the people who are supervising your child? Have you chosen the right summer camp, is it licensed? All these questions are mind numbing, and we do not rest until every questions are answered to our liking.

Of course, there are risks. But when you have debated everything with yourself and find that you are still allowing your child to go, the next important thing to worry about is providing the correct camping gear for your child. Yes, he needs camping gear even for summer camps. A summer camp is a rough place with all types of physical activities like canoeing, bonfires, walking trails in the woods and hiking, so you need to equip your child with the proper tools for his safety and comfort.

Make a checklist of what your child’s basic needs are. Don’t give him hand-me-downs, there are gears ideal for his age and size. He will need a tent, a sleeping bag, a water bottle or a canteen, a flashlight, a meal kit, a lantern, and a watch. Your child will also need a cap or visor and sunglasses to protect his eyes. Your child may also be required to bring a knife. There are knives specifically for camping with safety designs. A head flashlight may also come in handy, so you might want to consider that too. There are also available portable misting fans in the market for his instant breeze.

Yes, accidents can still occur despite best efforts to provide a safe camp environment. The injuries caused by these accidents can be just minor scratches and bruises, but it is always better to be safe than sorry, so pack a medical kit for your child. This is very important! You cannot go wrong with an insect repellant and a sun block too, as your child will be under the sun most of the time and needs protection for his skin.

But don’t stop there, a whistle can prove useful especially if they have a hiking activity. Sound travels far, so sling a whistle on his neck, so that if he becomes lost, he can also be easily located.

We are very protective of our children so entrusting them to the hands of other people can be hard. Safeguard the welfare of your child by equipping him with advices like staying away from pools, canals and other bodies of water without any adult supervision.

Before he leaves for camp, make sure that everything is in order. Knowing that the camping gear you have packed will serve as his security, as a parent, you will feel secured too. So have a deep breath and stop worrying. Instead, wish your child a fun-filled summer.
