For an area that receives a lot of foot traffic, the hallway’s role in home interior design is often underestimated. Many people consider its limited floor space too inconsequential to be worth the extra time, effort, and money needed for decorating purposes. Nevertheless, a well-designed hallway can give a big boost to your home’s aesthetic value. Whether you live in a condominium, a bungalow, or a mansion, the following tips can help turn your hallway into a real asset:

-Apply color and lighting to visually offset the hallway’s space constraints. Painting your walls and ceiling with bright and vibrant hues makes the area appear roomier. This visual effect, combined with adequate lighting, stimulates interest enough for observers to pay more attention to the hallway’s design and furnishings. Lightly colored highly glazed tiles on the floor also help reflect additional light around the hallway.

-Hang beautiful art pieces with universal themes. Choose from a wide variety of tropical artwork, or find large wall décor depicting either timeless treasures or picturesque landscapes. You may also hang family photos encased in elegant frames. Whichever you decide to use, you can emphasize these with accent lighting using powerful recessed spotlights.

-Avoid using the hallway as a dumping ground. Because it is one of the first things guests will see when they open the door, always keep the hallway tidy and free of clutter. If this is where you usually leave coats and bags, think about investing in appropriate storage. By searching online and visiting a few furniture stores, you will have a broad range of free-standing coat racks, shoe racks, and shelves to choose from.

-In most cases, you should follow the design theme of your living room. However, if your hallway is large enough, you can choose to give it a style of its own. Remember that you are working with a very limited space, so practice moderation at all times. Do not attempt to mix and match items from different design themes unless you consider each piece on its own merit and know how to coordinate basic design elements.

-Use hallway furniture appropriate to your chosen theme. If you have a Victorian-style home, find a side table made of dark solid wood with intricate carvings. Modern minimalist designs typically include glass and metal furnishings, while Hawaiian themes are characterized by rattan and bamboo items embellished with tropical artwork.

-Pay close attention to scale. A good hallway design is one that is in proportion to the size of the dwelling, and is both welcoming and relaxing. By using only furniture and decorations of a size appropriate to your home’s dimensions, you are creating a hallway that is bright, airy, and inviting instead of dark and enclosed.

With careful planning and attention, your hallway can become much more than a passageway between rooms. It can represent an extension of your personality or a nexus between worlds. Choose your design wisely, and don’t let the hallway’s small size stop you from thinking big.
