Fiber glassing is a great way to mold things back together or create new products off of old molds. Once you have gotten good at fiber glassing you could even do it for your friends for some extra money or may be they could do something for you in exchange. In This tutorial we will be teaching you how to make a fiberglass speaker cabinet so you can put it in your lounge.

First off this is what you will have to do.

• Draw out a design of how your box would look like. Get the dimensions of your cabinet to make sure that your dream box fits perfectly fine as you don’t want to spend all this time making a box that does not fit or look good. Also keep in mind the specifications of the sub woofer so that the volume comes out perfectly fine of the box. It should not be too big or too small as a thumb rule.

• Determine your enclosure type – Sealed, Ported or Band-pass.

• Make and then cut your desired pattern from cardboard, tape and glue it all up.

• Get a liter of fiberglass resin and fiberglass matting which is easily available in any of the auto stores. Get about 10 square meters of matting depending on the size of the cabinet you are making out of fiberglass.

• Start applying the fiberglass resin and fiberglass mat on your newly prepared surface of the box after you have waxed the whole surface area then cleaned the wax off.

• Let it dry for about 3-4 hours or till it is very hard.

• Pull out the fiberglass from the enclosure and verify whether it fits your speaker or not. It should fit it leaving some space around it but not too much.

• Now add 2-3 more layers of fiberglass above it so that it doesn’t crack when the sub-woofer beats loudly to your favorite songs.

• Let the whole structure dry for a few more hours before the finishing touch.

• Now sand your box so as to smoothen the surface. Choose from a 40-60 grit sand paper to even out the rough or uneven areas. Move on to 200-grit while nearing completion then paint your subwoofer enclosure any color you want.

• If you wish to have more volume inside, use polyfill. It will reduce the pressure inside the enclosure thereby giving more air volume and it will stiffen the whole structure.

Your sub woofer box is now complete. Just drill some holes at the back for your speaker wires you should use about a 12mm drill bit. You can also cover the enclosure with your favorite colored leather or carpet so as to match it with other stuff in your living room to do that all you have to do is get your favorite brand of glue and apply generously over the back of the carpet and then lay down the carpet and leave it to dry .
