4 Ways to Fail at Quitting Smoking (You'd Be Amazed at How Many People Do These)

Quitting smoking can be either very difficult, or very easy. This, of course, depends on how you go about doing it. There are a number of ways, however, that just don't work for quitting. These are listed below.

- Nicotine Replacement Therapy
NRT works on the concept that, if you're provided with an alternate source of nicotine, you won't feel the urge to smoke. Sounds great in theory, lousy in practice. The problem stems from the fact that you don't want nicotine so much as you want a cigarette. Namely, the actual act of lighting the cigarette, the stress relief, the ability to escape from annoying conversations for a smoke break, etc. Seeing as nicotine replacement does little towards giving you an alternative to those things, its depressing success rate makes sense.

Of course, there are also people who quit smoking and become addicted to nicotine replacements. Not really solving a whole lot there, are we?

- Nicotine Blockers
There are a billion different names for these, but they all do the same thing: prevent your body from receiving the effects of nicotine. The idea is that when you smoke, your body won't process the nicotine, and you won't feel any of the benefits of smoking. Supposedly, you'll eventually tire of the whole thing and stop smoking. Right.

The problem with this is the exact same as the problem with nicotine replacement therapy. You don't find cigarettes enjoyable because of their physical effects, you find them enjoyable because that's how you've trained your mind (more on this later).

Lets not forget the side effects, which range from nausea to abdominal pain, flatulence, and constipation. There have also been reported cases of suicidal and erratic behavior. All that for a fancy "magic pill" that doesn't really work anyway? No, thanks!

- Being Unprepared
Fail to plan, plan to fail, as they always say. Quitting smoking is easy if you know what you will be dealing with. This means preparing for the effects of withdrawal, and other types of mental preparedness.

Most of the people that fall into this category decide to stop on a whim, either because someone else told them they had to, or cigarettes were becoming too expensive. This leads us to the last category:

- "Giving Up" Smoking For Reasons Other Than For Its Own Benefits
For the sake of example, let's say that you like to have a slice of pie every few weeks. If someone were to tell you that you could never, ever, have pie again, that would inflate its value in your mind. Something that, normally, you don't give a lot of thought to all of a sudden becomes vastly more important to you.

The same works with quitting. If someone tells you that you need to stop, the only thing that will do is cause you to enjoy it even more. In order to properly stop your cigarette habit, you need to be the one that decides to quit, not anybody else.
