Your office should be a warm and inviting space that makes you want to go there every day. Surround yourself with items that invigorate you and allow you to be creative. Your first concern should be finding office furniture that is beautiful, as well as functional. You want to love the space and you want it to make you happy when you are working. Use the largest wall for a long, uninterrupted expanse of workspace. This will allow you to spread out. Make sure that you have adequate temporary storage space so that you can put your work away when you have guests or you are through for the day.

You should purchase a desk that works for the specific tasks you perform there; room for a computer and screen, telephone and other office supplies. If your work involves large blueprints or drawing, find an adjustable drafting table that can be folded out of the way when not in use. Since working usually requires some sort of research, having your books, manuals and other items handy is a must. Install bookshelves for frequently used items and closed storage for items you use less often. Incorporate pretty baskets, boxes and containers to hold all the miscellany of your work life. If you need to see your work to be inspired, install an erasable board, pegboard, corkboard or bulletin board along with the appropriate supplies to use them. Paint the corkboard; cover the corkboard or bulletin boards in material or paper that coordinates with your office.

Remember to include guest chairs and maybe a conference table and chairs for use when you have meetings. If you use comfy chairs, guests may be inclined to stay, so determine what atmosphere you want to convey. Using a conference table and chairs indicates that you are ready for business, whereas overstuffed chairs or a sofa make give the impression you want to visit as well as conduct a little business. You can find beautiful and sturdy office furniture almost anywhere, so always be on the lookout for a good deal.

Arranging your office is another important consideration. If you have a window, do you face the view or will it interfere with your thinking process? If you believe in Feng Shui, then arrange your office so that the chi is right for you. Allow enough room to move around the furniture, but don’t place regularly used items too far away or you will constantly be getting up and down, which might interfere with your thinking process. Organization is the key to an efficient work space. Whether you need piles around you or you need everything in its place and neatly labeled, make sure your system is consistent. Work will be much more enjoyable when you can always find what you are looking for.

Most of all make the space your office space. Guests should immediately know who they are working with when they walk in and ultimately, your office space is a reflection of who you are.
