If you've had trouble with credit in the past and now find yourself with a low score, you're probably anxious to boost up that number. The good news is that it can be done. With the right plan, you can rebuild credit with credit cards. Here's how.

Clean up the Old

The first step toward better credit is to get rid of anything that reflects negatively on your credit score. So if you have large, outstanding debts, now is the time to pay them off. Set up a plan to make monthly payments until each debt is completely gone.

If you're carrying a high balance on any of your credit cards, or have gone over the limit, look for ways to reduce the amount you owe. Try focusing on one card at a time, and work at making payments until the balance is at zero.

Some people find it helpful to have a financial advisor or debt counselor involved in the process of straightening out finances. If you follow this track, make sure you go to a reliable source. Also make sure that the fees are affordable. Work with the counselor to find ways to get rid of all of your debt.

Look for New

Many consumers with a low credit score find that it is difficult to get approved for a credit card. Some cards, however, are designed specifically for people trying to rebuild their finances. Look for secured cards or options for those with bad credit. You'll be more likely to get approved for one of these.

Once you've found a card that works for you, send in an application. When it arrives in the mail, don't start using it for large purchases right away. Instead, set up a plan that allows you to use the card for small purchases. Then pay off the balance each month.

Making small steps such as this will help your credit score to increase. Over time, credit bureaus will notice that you are making on-time payments and keeping your debts under control. In addition to these benefits, following this method will help you to establish better spending habits.

Plan for the Future

If you use a secured card for awhile, after a year or two of consistent, on-time payments, you can look into applying for a new card. Start by finding out where your credit stands. If you have a better score, you may find that you'll be able to apply for a regular credit card.

As you shop for a new card, look for one that has benefits that will work for your situation. When you get the card, continue to use smart management techniques. As soon as you make a purchase, figure out how you'll pay off the balance. By managing your finances wisely, your score will continue to increase.

For those who have bad credit, it can seem like getting back on track will take a long time. But it is possible, especially with a plan and the right credit cards. Start slowly and get rid of the old debt first. Then build up new credit with good habits.
