Your teak lounger has become the pride and joy of your patio. As one of the most cherished pieces of furniture you own, many of your friends and family are attracted to it for the charm and comfort it provides during the gentle summer months. A natural piece that ties everything in on your patio, you want to make sure that you get the longest life possible out of this investment, and make sure that it takes a beautiful color all year round.

The great thing about the teak lounger (and the fact that it is made of teak) is the fact that it naturally stands up to everything that the world can throw at it. From pest attacks to erosion due to nature, your teak furniture will hold up to everything that the world wants to bring at it. Though from time to time, you will find dirt and debris making your lounger less appealing. Cleaning these pieces are also no problem whatsoever – simply mix a mild cleaner (such as dishwashing detergent) with water, and scrub generously. The dirt and debris will melt away as you scrub down the chair, giving it the original look you fell in love with a long time ago.

As time weathers on, you may find that your teak lounger will change in color – that golden brown hue that you used to enjoy so much will fade into a dark gray, giving your lounge chairs a deeper and weathered look about it. This is a natural effect caused by the sun constantly shining down on your furniture. There is nothing to be alarmed about whatsoever: the structural integrity of your teak wood will still be preserved, with a deep and aged look that many people actually prefer over the brand new golden brown look.

If you want to keep the golden brown look that your teak lounger comes out of the box with, there are many ways you can protect that great look, and keep your lounger looking like it is brand new for years to come. From the days that teak was used to build sailing ships, oil treatments have been the long preferred way of making teak look good, as well as providing an extra layer of protection over the years. Several retailers sell teak oil treatments that will work as a sunscreen for your furniture, giving it the best color and protection over time. Be sure to apply the oil at least every three months by spreading an even coat across your furniture.

You may want the same protection that oil provides, but want a different color for your teak lounger, so that it will fit in better with the rest of your furnishing choices. This can be achieved by staining your teak furniture. While I have written before that teak does not need to be stained, it can be to match the common theme of your deck. Many hardware stores will carry the appropriate stains that will seal and protect your teak furniture for years to come. Just apply multiple coats evenly, and leave in a warm and level place to dry. If you decide to go this route, know that stains are made to be a permanent bond between the wood and the stain. If you ever want to go back to the natural color of your teak furniture, it will take sanding down your furniture many times before you get back to the natural color – giving your patio furniture a shorter life span.

Teak loungers are made of a very versatile wood that will provide you years of enjoyment for your investment. And with a variety of options to make them look good throughout the years, you can’t go wrong by making one of these special items yours.
