Not only do they not scare away the animals, but they will take many times more flashes with the same amount of power as a traditional incandescent flash.

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that if you are setting up in a public area then it is more likely that someone will steal your equipment. Try to camouflage the camera as best as you can. You can also use a security box; this might be a worthwhile investment to keep your camera equipment. You can either take that route or just spend less on the camera and take your chances. Even the best security devices can be compromised by the thief that really wants to get at your equipment.
