Beginning Meditation Practices

Deciding to begin learning meditation can be quite intimidating. Not only will you be learning something new but you will also be getting different advice from a number of different sources. Opinions on meditation itself as well as the various techniques varies immensely from person to person. This is not to say that some are right and some are wrong but that there are in fact numerous ways to meditate. Some meditation practices are quite simple and take little effort from the meditator and some are much more difficult and require a fairly controlled and/or practiced mind. But rest be assured that if you wish to learn meditation there is a technique out there for you. Throughout the various techniques out there are a few common practices that you will see in almost any meditation technique.

The first technique that is common in meditation practices is concentration. Concentration is important in order to clear your mind and make way for a state of higher consciousness. When you begin you will want to tell your mind and body to relax. You will then want to close your eyes and focus on all the various sounds you hear around you. Try to distinguish the different sounds from one another but without really thinking about the sounds themselves. Let whatever sounds are there flow naturally into your body so that you hear all of the sounds but yet you hear nothing at all. You should carry on this way for approximately 10 – 20 minutes each day until you are comfortable with being able to release such sounds and switch the concentration to your own breathing. When you are comfortable doing so you can carry on to the next step. You will now want to choose a sound you can easily follow such a music or the television or maybe the traffic outside. You should be able to follow these sounds without the mind switching to other things other than the particular focus sound. This technique should be practiced until t can be done on a regular basis. Once this can be done you are ready to move onto a higher level of meditation.

The next level of meditation for those beginners that have mastered the previous level focuses on the visual aspect of meditation. You will want to begin by relaxing as you normally would and focusing on your breathing technique for a moment before starting this next level. You then want to conjure up an image in your mind of your most beloved place. This could be a favorite park or a lakeside cabin where your spend your summers or any other place that brings up good memories whether it be real or imagined. You then should meditate thinking of this special place until you are able to effortlessly conjure up the pleasant images of the particular place. By doing so you are enabling yourself to return to this place at any time and bring to the surface the feelings of happiness you associate with the particular place.

These meditation techniques will help you to experience true meditation and aid you in future meditation goals as well.
