When it comes to driving, many of us become incredibly possessive over our vehicles. For many, your car is your 'home away from home'. It's a place where you can blast your music, where you can eat and have private conversations with those that you care about. However, there comes a time when a lot of us will hesitantly turn our car keys over to someone else0 even for something as small as moving a car out of a driveway so that someone who is blocked in can get out. It's a big deal!

There are also times when it is good to hand over your car keys. For example, if you have been out drinking alcohol with friends at a bar or at a restaurant or even at someone's house, never place yourself behind the driver's seat of your car or anyone else's. Always opt to have someone sober drive you home or call for alternate transportation. The money that you spend in cab fare is a small price to pay for someone elses life or a sullied driving record.

There are also times when we must be cautious about when and to whom we are handing our keys to. For example, many young couples (and older couples too) who are in relationships but who aren't married and therefore aren't listed on each others car insurance policies- will often let one another drive their car. And most of the time, there is nothing wrong with this unless you get into an accident. The same thing goes for friends. Even if you know that your friend is a good driver with a solid reputation of driving, car accidents happen- and often they are unpredictable. Is that a chance that you are willing to take?

Another example of handing over your car keys to someone else comes when you are taking road trips- especially road trips that are long. I can remember driving up to New York a few years ago with a friend. I noticed that my friend was getting tired while they were driving. It was dark out, and I knew that the risk was too great that we would get into an accident if the person accidentally fell asleep at the wheel, so I volunteered to take over driving. The car wasn't mine, but it was better for me (who was more alert) to drive than someone else who was falling asleep at the wheel. This brings up a good point about driving on long trips with others. Even a relatively short trip of only a couple of hours can be enough time for someone to grow groggy behind the wheel. Often times, when two people or more are driving, the motion of the car will be enough to lull one to sleep. However, if you can, as a passenger- you should try to stay awake and keep the driver engaged in conversation. As long as they are talking, they are usually awake. Additionally, if you are talking to someone who is driving, you can better gauge how they are feeling. It doesn't take much to identify someone who is sleepy.
