When you have a car, you run the risk of getting into an accident at some point and not necessarily because it was your fault but because of other people who are irresponsible while they drive. In the event that you get into an accident, you should always be prepared ahead of time this way you know what to do.

If you get into an accident with another vehicle, the first thing that you want to make sure that you do is remain calm. Next, you'll want to get out and make sure that the other drivers and occupants are ok. Depending on the severity of the accident, it may be necessary to call for an ambulance. Regardless of what the situation is, it is advisable that you alert the police as to what happened this way they can write up an accident report which you will use to submit to your insurance company.

In some cases, you'll run into someone who is not as nice to you. When you get into an accident, there are a lot of tensions and emotions running high. You may be upset with the other person. Similarly, the other person may feel as if you were the one who is at fault for the accident. In many cases, the two parties cannot reach an agreement as to who caused the accident, and a fight may even break out. This is why it is always advisable to get the police involved. When you get the police involved, they act as a third party to the accident and are able to objectively opine as to what happened. This is also the reason why insurance companies will typically request a police report, because they know that the police will not favor one person over the other. Their job is to be as fair and as accurate in their reporting the information.

If you own a car or drive in one on a regular basis, then it is always a good idea to keep a little emergency kit of items in the event that you get into an accident or a situation that requires it. An emergency kit should always include at least one good first aid kit. Aside from this, emergency kits can include a variety of items depending on the type of driving that you do as well as the type of person that you are. For instance, in my Jeep, I keep an emergency bin of items that include some of the following: first aid kit, 2 blankets, a full change of clothes, a jacket, sweatshirt and sweatpants, umbrella, flashlight, tire pressure gauge, etc.

Remember, prevention is the best cure for all ills. Avoid getting into an accident by first being aware of your surroundings and paying attention to how others are driving. This is called being a 'defensive driver'. Also, remaining relatively calm while driving is a key factor in avoiding accidents or at best reacting better once you are involved in one. When you are calm, you are able to think more clearly and make better decisions.
