There are a lot of options available at your disposal, if you wish to change from glasses to contact lenses. The lenses are available in various types, and there is a good and a flip side to each of them. Below, I have listed some of the popular types of lenses:

• Rigid gas-permeable: These are the most basic contact lenses, which are made of flexible plastic and if you wear it, you will be able to see things more clearly. Also, they are quite durable. Still, for the lenses to adapt to your eyes , you must use them constantly and ensure that they do not slip off-center.

• Daily wear lenses: These are the soft lenses made of flexible plastic. The AOA [American Optometric Association] believes that daily wear of these soft lenses are good for people with an active life, since they don’t come out very easily. The flip side is that since they get dirty, they need to be replaced quite regularly.

• Extended wear lenses: As the name suggests, these lenses can be worn for a long time, for up to seven days continuously. The downside in this case is that since they are worn for a longer duration, there can be some complications with the eyes. These lenses come in a disposable version as well, which have the same advantages as that of the daily wear lenses. AOA recommends the wearer to wear these lenses for at least six days before getting a new one.

Most of the contact lenses are available in multi-packs, where six lenses are packed together. The manner of packing is such that all the lenses have sterility. Though most of them will be similar, some lenses might be different depending on the manufacturer. Read the instructions below to carefully open the package. Just shake the package of the lens and see whether the lenses are floating in the solution in which they are kept in. Then peel off the covering to get to the lens. It would be better to place the package on a flat surface to stabilize the lens.

Handling the lenses – You must handle either the right or the left lens first, from the very beginning, so as to ensure that you form a habit of doing so and the lenses don’t get mixed up in the future. Remove a lens from the pack and check whether it is clean. Don’t use a lens, if its unclean. Also, make sure that the lens is not turned inside out.

Placing the lenses in the eyes – After checking that the lens is clean and not inside out, you must use your middle finger, pull down the lower eye lid in a gentle manner, and use the other hand to lift up the upper lid. The middle finger is recommended to ensure steadiness of your hand. After that, just gently place the lens on the eyes. Then release the eyelids and blink. You will see that the lens would adjust themselves at the center on their own.
