Regardless of specific technique, there are some basics to a hair transplant procedure that remain the same over time and between physicians who perform the procedure.

Source of Hair to Transplant
The hair for a hair transplant comes from a different part of the patient’s own head. This is the best and most natural way to achieve thicker hair and reverse the look of hair loss.

Areas of the Scalp
In terms of balding, the scalp is divided into two general areas. The area on top an in the center of the head is considered susceptible to balding, and the area around the sides and back, known as the “horseshoe fringe” is not susceptible to hair loss.

The hair to “donate” to for hair transplant generally comes from the “horseshoe fringe,” since the hair follicles that are transplanted will retain their characteristics, even when they are moved to a different part of the head.

Can Hair Come From Other Parts of the Body?
Ask the experts at Hair Transplant services about follicle isolation. With this procedure, single follicles can be isolated and removed from the chest, stomach and back in either single follicles or a small group of follicles.

While it is not as common as hair transplantation from other parts of the head, using hair from other parts of the body is possible.

How are The Hairs Removed for Transplant?
While the size of the hair sections removed has changed over time, the basic procedure for transplanting hair has not.

The procedure used to involve plugs about the size of a pencil eraser, leaving holes that healed on their own and a distinct look of plugs around the hairline. This hair transplantation method has been refined in recent years to use either a strip of donor hair or follicle removal.

The strip is divided into small pieces for transplant, and the scar is stitched closed to leave little trace of the procedure. With the individual follicle removal, there is no visible scar.

Transplant Procedure
With the smaller micro transplants, there is no longer the need to stamp holes in the scalp to accommodate plugs. Instead, plastic surgeons, such as the experts who perform hair transplant procedures, making small incisions with a scalpel or a laser to accommodate the minigrafts. This leads to a much more natural look in the finished hair transplantation.

Those who use follicular transplant advocate even smaller incisions that can be spread out naturally, and lead to a more natural looking transplant.

Does it Hurt?
With the modern techniques and improved harvesting and transplant technologies, there is very little discomfort to the patient. The more skilled the surgeon, the less discomfort the patient suffers.

This is one of the primary benefits of choosing a noted professional such as the plastic surgeons, such as the surgeons who are certified to operate hair transplant. They do usually give the patient a local anesthetic to minimize the pain of the tiny incisions in the scalp.

Most surgeons prefer that the patient be awake during the procedure, since that means less risk for both the patient and the surgeon.
