Training is a necessary element for anything one might wish to accomplish in life, and I'd like to give you 4 reasons why every Christian should pursue evangelism training.

• Before Jesus sent the disciples out into the world, He trained them
Most Christians are familiar with the Great Commission verses, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. Matthew 28:19,20. This command wasn't just for the disciples, but for all believers. Jesus had taught the disciples who He was and how they should live as believers, and then commanded them to teach others. Paul understood this command, and he in turn told Timothy, "And what you have heard from me…commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." II Timothy 2:2 Peter understood the importance for training, and said, "…always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you." I Peter 3:15

• Notice the farmer and the harvesters
Jesus used many analogies to get His point across when H was teaching. One specific time recorded in Scripture, He compared the world of today to a field ready for harvest, "The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest." Luke 10:2 A farmer will seek to learn all he can to produce a better harvest each year, and when it comes time for that harvest to be brought in, he'll be careful to select those who have had the training in reaping a harvest. The same should be true for believers; learn all you can about evangelism, and train others to bring in souls to God's kingdom.

• Fear will be replaced by God's strength
Most people have at least a little fear of the unknown, and when it comes to evangelism, believers are no exception. Some of the most common reasons given for not evangelizing are, "I didn't know what to say," or "I was afraid they'd know more than me," as well as many other excuses. If a believer is going to do as God commands and go into the world to teach His Word, training in that Word will automatically eliminate certain of those fears. When one has knowledge of God through His Word, what's the need for fear? God promises His strength when we follow His commands, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

• Defense against the attack of wolves is crucial
Jesus warned the disciples about those who would try to destroy them, calling them wolves, "Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves." Matthew 7:15 Jesus gave the disciples the training they would need to fend off these wolves, and believers today also need that training. Anywhere one goes he will have to face those who will try to confuse and distort the Bible and manipulate him into believing something contrary to what God says. How will he stand against them without proper training? Jesus said. "Look, I'm sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be shrewd (wise) as serpents and harmless as doves." Matthew 10:16

Don't end with these 4 reasons to pursue evangelism training. Search for other really good reasons (they aren't hard to find), and begin training so that, as you journey through this life, you'll be ready, able, and willing to reach out to the lost.
