What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure designed to create softer, smoother, more evenly toned face, neck or hands. It can help clear up line fines by the mouth and under the eyes.

A chemical peel can also help get rid of sun damaged legions, especially eliminate and prevent pre-cancerous spots. These peels are also good for limiting the appearance of freckles and age spots, as well as some types of acne.

How Does it Work?

There are several types of chemicals that can be used in the process. These include any of the following acids: carbonic, glycolic, lactic, salicylic, or trichloroacetic. First the skin is cleaned and then one or more of the chemicals are spread over the areas to be treated. These harsh substances will burn the top layers of the skin, causing it to blister up. After the top layers peel off, new, fresh, smoother part is revealed.

Patients' may feel a warm feeling for several minutes during the application of the chemicals, and the heat will turn to a stinging feeling thereafter. If the discomfort is intense, pain medications can be taken, but many times, cold compresses are all that is needed to stop the stinging.

How Will My Skin React?

If you have light to medium tones, you will likely see dramatic results. Those with darker tones may not see as much difference, but certain conditions like age spots and pigmentation inconsistencies in those with darker complexion can still sometimes be aided by chemical peels.

Regardless of your skin type, after a chemical peel your face or other treated skin will look like you got bad sunburn complete with redness and peeling. This part of the healing process should be over after a week. If the procedure was a medium or deep chemical peel, you may have to wait about two weeks before the fresh, undamaged skin is visible. During the healing time, you may need to wear some protective bandages to keep yourself from the sun and infectious particles.

After the procedure your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight for awhile and it will be very important to apply sunscreen to the treated area to prevent further burning and pain. In some cases where the chemicals burned especially deep, your doctor will also prescribe you some antibiotics to help prevent the risk of infection during the recovery process. To achieve maximum positive results, you can have these peels repeated a few time for a couple months.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

There are a few risks, although the procedure is generally considered safe. First, there is a slight risk of scarring following the peel. Your doctor can usually find other ways to treat and remove the scars though. Second, there is a risk of the original problems coming back in the instance of future pregnancies, the use of birth control pills, and just aging.

And lastly, if you have herpes, you may be at risk for an outbreak of cold sores, but these can be treated with prescription medications. A chemical peel is a great way to get younger, fresher looking skin at any age. Your doctor can help you figure out what type of peel will be best for your needs.
