I heard some incredible stories about children in evangelism recently. They truly bless the heart!

• A six-year-old boy, in a country where Christianity is prohibited, became a Christian and wanted to share Jesus with his teacher. He took a Bible and a video that talked about Jesus to school with him in his backpack, and when he could, he asked his teacher if she wanted to know about Jesus. She indicated that she did, so he left his backpack open while he went to recess, making it easy for her to take the Bible and video out without observation. The following day he asked her if she'd gotten them and what she thought about Jesus. Through his courage, he was able to see someone come to know Jesus!

• A family disappeared in a communist country because one ten-year-old girl couldn't help giving God glory. She had recently come to know Christ and while in school had silently prayed for help in taking a test. When she was asked how she managed to do so well on the test, she responded that it was by God's grace. The teacher was angry, and a few days later the government took the entire family away-- their location is still unknown.

• In a Muslim country, twin boys risked flunking their entire grade by refusing to take a test on the Islamic beliefs. They were only 13, and were told by their parent that it was okay if they took the test in order to pass the grade. Both boys wrote on the test that they were Christians, and didn't answer a single question.

• A young girl's rebuke to an older man on a street corner caused him to see the sin of taking God's name in vain.

How is it possible for these children to be so brave? Why would they risk ridicule, torture, or even death, not only for themselves, but also for their families?
Why does it seem like Christian children in free countries have a much harder time being unafraid and unashamed? I think there are three possibilities:

• If in a free country, each can believe according to his or her own views, and children (if they have any connection to God in their lives) are taught different things about God depending on where they are. In school they're taught to be "open-minded" and look at evolution as being just as possible as believing in God. At home they may have parents who teach them the stories of the Bible and how those stories should affect their lives. In church they may be given a slightly different view than what their parents teach. Their friends may have a completely different view on religion and can talk them in circles. What a challenge!

• Distractions can easily lead children away from any thought about God and Jesus. In a free country, not only is their freedom in religion; there's also quite a bit of freedom in the media, advertising, marketing and promotional world. With these things bombarding children every day, Jesus will easily be given a backseat in their lives. He will not be the center of their lives, but will only be a small part of them.

• A clear view of the Bible and who God is seems to be less and less dominant in Christian circles. Children are not being taught the whole story of the Bible and how it relates to them in every area of their lives, so they have no desire or reason to share it with others or stand up in the face of adversity. When they learn that God is life, and that Jesus gives new life, and that their lives (and the lives of everyone they know) are nothing without Him, it will be impossible to stop them from telling others! Little else is more challenging to others than the believing heart of a child.
