Most every product purchased comes with a set of instructions. Especially if you are purchasing any type of complex or electronic device. There is no need to deny it; we all almost always toss them aside never to be seen again. With a treadmill it is easy to assume, 'hey, you turn it on, push some buttons on a fancy console that tells you how far and how long you've walked, and when it starts (or says to begin), you walk. Jog and run if that is your choosing, either way it doesn't exactly strike people as a difficult task. The truth is that, not for all products, failure to read and keep those instructions can cause injury, possibly extreme injury.

Think of it as if you were walking around your neighborhood instead of the treadmill, you need to know some basics. If you never knew why not to, well then you could simply continue your walk and stray into the middle of the street. You might get some small scrape 'injury' if you tripped when stepping back onto the curb, or you could receive 'extreme injury' by getting hit by a car. Reading about safety is great but ideally, you should dig out your manual to get complete details: as only a few will be mentioned here.
These are some basics that seem obvious, but important none the less. First, make sure that your treadmill is safely placed, put together correctly, and not accessible to children. Do not begin your program while standing on the machine belt. Put each foot on each side that does not move. Only once the belt is moving at its correct speed should you then step onto it and begin.

You know about hand eye coordination. Use your foot and eye coordination. When you walk make sure to keep your line of vision straight ahead. This will help keep you centered and avoid injury due to straying a bit to the side or a bit too close to the front or back of the belt.

Some people believe that it has become merely a myth that you are not supposed to use the handrails. They are there; you are supposed to hold onto them to help support you right? This is completely false and it is no myth. You are not always supposed to use the handrails. You should use them when learning how to use the treadmill, but let go once you feel comfortable. It is more natural to the body and improves your workout. Reliance on the rails puts unnecessary stress on the upper body and even cuts down your workout efficiency by reducing how many calories you really burn through your workout program.

Something you probably never thought about, understandably so, is what would happen if you were running and the treadmill came to an immediate stop. No not due to a defect, the power went out. Obtaining a surge protector would be an excellent step to take towards preventing what would probably be an injury of a fair degree. Consider as many possibilities as you can, you don't have anything to lose, and someday you might just be glad you did.
