Power steering fluid is the hydraulic fluid that is useful in the transmission of power in the steering system of a car. To check the steering fluid of the car, the first step is to find the location of the reservoir. On locating it, one will be able to see the cap. Remove the cap in order to see the dipstick, which is placed on the bottom of the cap. One should always wipe the dipstick first before cleaning it and then placing it back. The next step would be to tighten the dipstick and then remove it so that one can know the proper level of the fluid. From the dipstick, one will be able to see the different levels. This means that if the vehicle had been in a cold environment, the level will be low but if it is hot, then the level will be slightly higher. One must always make sure that the level is topped off by getting the correct fluid from the service station or store. This is important as it keeps the car in good condition and therefore reduces the chances of breaking down.

To change the power steering fluid, one must follow the steps that are illustrated in the instructions manual of the car. To maintain the power steering system, one is required to follow some few preventive measures. When one hears whining noises while turning the steering wheel, he or she should immediately check the power steering system immediately. The owner of the car should never allow the level of the fluid to fall by ignoring any leaks, a condition that would eventually lead to the power steering fluid pump wrecking due to running without fluid. In addition, the power steering fluid pump should be changed after some time as recommended by the manufacturer, of course depending with the model of the vehicle.

It is important for one to note that he or she may not need to change all the fluid in the system because sometimes, it can be in the right condition. The change should be determined by the level of deterioration. Normally, the power steering fluid should appear either red/pink or amber (as in many vehicles) in color. If one realizes that immediately he or she places new fluid it turns darker, they should change the power steering fluid urgently to avoid running with inadequate fluid.

One will need a fluid transfer tool in order to change the fluid. To change the fluid, one should draw the fluid from the small reservoir and then replace it with a measure of fresh fluid and this should be done several times in a week. Removing the dipstick or filler cap from the reservoir, the fluid should be removed with a removal tool and then filled to the level that is required. The engine should then be started and the steering moved from right to left for a few times. The final step would now be to check the level of the fluid.
