Twitter has become one of the most popular social networking sites today, overshadowed only by biggies like Facebook and MySpace. It is no wonder that many people are coming aboard Twitter to promote their business. As Twitter would say it, many entrepreneurs are Tweeting they way to online visibility and hence, success.

If you are on Twitter too, what you really need to have is a good Twitter profile and then you need to brand it. The first part is relatively easy and does not take much time. Everyone knows how to make a profile on a social networking website. Just be true to the details and do not go overboard with the hype or the sales pitch and it would count as a good business profile. There are various customizable options on Twitter itself. You could use these to make your profile look different. And if it is some real difference that you are hankering for, you could go for some patches and downloads that are compatible with Twitter. You could find these by conducting relevant searches on popular search engines.

You need to keep your business profile page different but at the same time subtle. Over-the-top does not work in today’s times, and that applies to Twitter profiles too.

But, what really takes time and effort is the branding part. Branding is where you are making your business visible. Real branding is when your business becomes popular not just on Twitter but even outside it. Remember that branding is not just about the colors that you use and the font that you use; it has more to do with the recall value of your business name itself. When you are on Twitter, Twitter business branding will refer to the way in which your Twitter account name appears and becomes popular.

There is much to be gained through Twitter business branding. A lot of enterprising folk are selling these in the same way they sell domain names. They build a profile page, brand it and when it becomes popular, they sell it for thousands of dollars. This takes some time and effort, but it does give a very rich dividend at the end of the day.

One way to go about Twitter business branding is to first establish a website on Twitter and then use the same look and feel as the corporate website. For example, if you have a business website that’s named http://www.xyz.com, you make a Twitter profile page that’s names http://www.twitter.com/xyz and then give this page the same appearance as the corporate page. This way, you are making your Twitter page an extension of your existing page.

The benefit of this is that people can search your Twitter page with your business brand name. They are able to find things more easily and also the recall value of your brand increases.

But you need to be quick about this. Time is of the essence. If you have a popular business that’s not on Twitter yet, someone might use your brand name on Twitter. This is a clear case of plagiarism, but you can’t help it once it is done. The best thing for you is to realize the importance of Twitter business branding right now and go about it when there is still time.
