For those that are not familiar with the Freemasons they are a society of men that class themselves as a fraternity. There are many branches or Lodges that exist all with their own leader and followers. They purport there is no one leader that oversees all of the Lodges. Their concept is to keep the craft of Masonry alive by paying homage to it throughout the years. The Freemasons are said to be the most secretive society in existence.

Being as this Society is so shrouded in mystery it often raises the interest of others. It raises controversy over whether it is a good society for the betterment of humanity, which is what the Freemasons claim, or is it simply a cult?

The Freemasons rely heavily on symbolism. Meaning that the tools of the trade of Masonry are the symbols that portray them and apparently, this symbolism is carried out in various aspects of their meetings. One such symbol that is highly regarded is the Mason’s apron.

Naturally if there is a controversy over an established group or Society people want to know where the leaders of the Country stand regarding it. This is why there has been so much controversy as to whether George Washington was a Freemason. As we mentioned the Mason’s apron is a symbol for the Freemasons and one of these was recorded in the possessions of George Washington after his death.

It would seem that there are variations in these aprons according to status. They have embroidered symbols on them. The apron reported as belonging to George Washington can be viewed in the Philadelphia hall.

Those individuals that do not believe that the Freemasons are the brotherly love society that they portray do not believe that George Washington would have been part of the Freemason society. On the other hand, the Freemasons go to great lengths to prove that he was. Perhaps this is important for them in order to promote their good standing in society.

Some of said that, yes Washington was originally a Freemason but renounced his membership. Yet Martha Washington had the Freemason hold and conduct her husband’s funeral. The Governor of Pennsylvania wanted to ensure that Washington’s name was not linked to the Freemasons and went to the point of having a publication tract relating that Washington had not had any part in any Mason event.

Naturally, the more stature one holds in Society makes their beliefs and actions consequential. It comes down to if George Washington was in fact a true Freemason then he must have endorsed the Society as being a good and proper entity. This would give the Freemasons substantial grounds to stand upon in support of their organization. On the other hand those skeptics that believe Washington was not part of the society go to great lengths in their arguments to document that Washington was not part of this Society.

In summary after all is said and done, it raises this question. If George Washington were in fact a Freemason, does that give them the credibility of their place in society that they promote? George Washington was human, and humans make mistakes. Just because he was such a prominent figure, could it not be that even if he were a Freemason that he misconstrued what they were according to the anti Freemasons?
