Before collecting tools for the toolbox, it's important to have an idea what tools are needed:

• If one were to go out and take a survey, asking people what they know about God or the Bible, I think many Christians would be startled to see how many people know little, if anything. It's nearly impossible for someone who doesn't know about God or the Bible to listen and instantly believe God's salvation plan. It's like asking them to trust a perfect stranger. Questions must be answered first.

• Man's need of salvation. It's hard for someone who doesn't know about God or the Bible to have a stranger walk up and convince him that he needs to be saved. He won't understand the concept of being a sinner until he is taken back to the beginning and shown that all people are sinners because of the disobedience of Adam and Eve. They need to see that because of that disobedience, there is separation from God and punishment for sin, and no person can do anything to be freed from punishment.

• God's provision. After learning who God is and who mankind is, one would clearly want to know why such a God would provide salvation, and then would most certainly want to know what that provision is. The Old Testament sacrificial system should be addressed, because a full understanding of why Jesus had to die is pictured through the sacrifices of the Old Testament.

• Man's inadequacy to earn salvation. Many people think that they've been good enough to attain heaven, but they don't understand that God requires perfection in order to be in His presence. If they are shown the Ten Commandments, they can understand exactly what it would take to be good enough to get to heaven, and they would see that it is beyond anyone's capability. Then they can see and understand that Jesus was the only one who could pay sin's price, and that He did so willingly.

• The concept of salvation. Once the previous topics are addressed, one could then show that the only thing God requires from mankind for salvation is belief. Anyone who wishes to be saved must believe that He is God and over all the universe, and Jesus is His Son and only He could pay the penalty for sin. This payment took care of death, and Jesus' resurrection is the promise of eternal life for those who believe.

Now that the details have been explained, we can begin to build the toolbox with age-resistant and wear-proof evangelism tools

• General dialogue is the most commonly used tool in the toolbox. Although it may be hard for some, conversation is normally enjoyable, and few people resist discussion on any topic. The key is to get discussion turned to spiritual things. Some have even used visual aids to help in making a point in a spiritual discussion.

• Reading material is a good tool to add to the toolbox. A book sharing the Bible's message can have a life-changing impact on someone who has shown an interest in spiritual things but never had good explanation given to him. Many don’t use this tool because they don't feel that a person would be interested, but it's surprising how many will accept something to read when they aren't interested in conversation.

• Since we live in a day of electronics, giving someone a video or DVD to watch that gives a clear gospel presentation can be very effective. Some people are disinterested in reading a book, so they would be the perfect recipient of a video. Like those who would read anything they can get their hands on, some people will watch whatever is recommended or given to them.

• It's hard to find anyone today who doesn't have a CD player somewhere, whether in his car or at home, so the gospel on CD is another great tool. Many people enjoy popping something in their player as they head to work, and would probably be very receptive to being given something new.

• Tracts are the most commonly used tool for evangelism, and they provide terrific means for starting conversations. However, if the believer is handing them out to passers-by, he must be sure that the tract explains the whole gospel because so many are unfamiliar with God and the Bible.
