Picture the deck of an air-carrier during an F-16 landing, packed with dozens of personnel, each assigned to a specific responsibility to see the aircraft lands safely on the deck of the carrier, from noting the position of the landing gear, the jet’s speed, to the angle of descend, the flaps, everything. Dozens of people are in constant communication with the tower, one another and the pilot, making sure that landing the 50,000 pound fighter, which is armed with missiles and carries 5,000 pounds of fuel, is a success.

Suddenly, a young crewman notices that a wrench, which is supposed to be on his tool belt, is missing. In a split moment, he signals to abort landing, because during that split moment his brain told him that a piece of steel, if loose on the deck, could be sucked into a jet’s engine with catastrophic results.

This story, told by a good friend of mine, is the best example that I can think of to illustrate the power of immediate action. In the above example, recognizing the problem and taking immediate action, in most likelihood, saved the F-16 from destruction.

The act of taking immediate action to control your life is highly correlated with the degree of your success, even with your survival, as very often most individuals equate success with survival. All this micro-management of human actions is not made perfectly clear to us, nor is consciously understood by our brain, but it does take place. We possess a perfect system that eventually produces perfect results.

It must be made clear that in business, not all actions will produce immediate successful results. There may be numerous intermediate steps that one may have to take to reach success.

But it is imperative here to understand that these intermediate steps towards success are the most important ones. These are the steps that will determine whether you will make it of not. Unfortunately, most of the adventures and/businesses fail right in the eve of their success because the opportunist and/or businessman did not know how to ignore that temporary failure and utilize it as experience or knowledge rather as condition for success. In many instances, this is of course due to lack of confidence, lack of willingness to assume risks and responsibilities, the fear of failure or defeat.

I always say that fear is not a problem, for fear is natural. It is a basic ingredient of the human nature. What is then the problem? The problem, is and always has been facing of the unknown. Likewise, failure is as natural as success. In fact, it is the only way success is recognized. What is then the general formula for success? It is the ability to recognize the factors or variables involved and take action.
