These days, office space is at a premium. Growing businesses often struggle with the issue of storage and expanding your office space can be expensive. Documents, files, and supplies can quickly take over and before you know it you’re using a box of staples and pencil sharpeners as your office chair. If your business suffers the same problem then you might want to consider renting a storage unit.

Storage units give you the space you need to expand your business without the expense of office rental.

Storage units have many uses and just as many advantages. These include easy access and security. Because of this, they are becoming increasingly popular with all kinds of businesses. Here are some examples of how businesses take advantage of extra storage space:

Restaurants:
Restaurants make use of additional storage facilities by using the space to store extra tables, cleaning supplies and the mountains of ketchup they go through.

Contractors:
Contractors use storage units to hold supplies and equipment, as well as their paperwork, invoices and records.

Movers/Realtors/Apartment Managers:
These people need extra storage more than most. Storing furniture for vacant apartments or whilst helping clients move is important. Items are kept safe from accidental breakage, water damage and vandalism. Storage units are also great for housing lawn and garden equipment.

Financial/Medical/Legal:
These types of businesses often accumulate a large amount of documentation which needs to be stored away for future reference. Client information is sensitive and needs to be stored securely, as do financial records.

Pharmaceutical:
Pharmaceutical companies make use of climate controlled storage to store their products at a constant temperature. This ensures the products will not spoil.

Retail:
Because of the popularity of Internet trading, small retailers are popping up everywhere. If you have created your own Internet trading company you will probably need a place to store your goods. Working from home is fine but stock can soon envelope your house. Remember that videos, CDs and DVDs need to be stored in the correct conditions to avoid warping.

Administration:
All businesses have administration needs. Records need to be stored for future reference as well as for govermental regulation.

You’d think that in the digital era we live in that information storage would not be a problem. Thousands of files can be stored on a hard drive no bigger than a single paperback book. But despite the use of computers paperwork is just as necessary as it ever has been and businesses still accumulate a large number of documents and files. These all need to be safely stored for future reference.

Unfortunately, whilst computer hard-drives might be rugged, paper is not. If stored improperly, paper can easily degrade or even disintegrate. Damp conditions can cause mold spores to grow and damage paper. Heat can also be damaging and excessive sunlight can fade the text of important documents. Records stored on film or audio tape are also susceptible to the same kinds of damage. Because of this it is important to ensure the right conditions for document storage. A climate controlled storage unit is the best solution to this problem. Renting a storage unit will not only free up valuable office space but will ensure that your records and documents are kept in the best possible condition.

When looking for a suitable storage unit there are a few things you should consider. Firstly, you should look at the location of the storage lot. The accessibility of your possessions is paramount. You should also check the security of the storage unit and make certain that it is safe to leave your valuable items there.

Secondly, the price. Cost is everything to a small business. Make sure there are no hidden fees or surcharges. It is also useful to ask if there are any special prices or offers for businesses. Remember that you might need use of the unit for a long time so finding the right deal might save you a great deal of money in the long run.
