Moving home can be an extremely stressful exercise. Logistically speaking it can be a total nightmare. It’s not like preparing for a long vacation; you don’t simply have to pack your clothes and the essentials. You also have to organize and pack your family, furniture and every single item in your home. Of course you’re going to take your DVD collection and your other prize possessions, but what about all the other items stored away at the back of your cupboards and draws? Do you really need all of that stuff? Do you have room for all of it in your new home? Don’t you just wish you could leave it behind?

Of course you don’t want to leave it behind. If it wasn’t worth keeping you’d have thrown it away by now. But it does pose the very important question of storage. If you are the type of person that accumulates clutter or simply refuses to let anything go to waste this can be a big problem. Owning too many possessions is never an excuse to move to a new house, but it can provide a good opportunity to de-clutter. Let’s face it, if you don’t you’ll find the whole process much more difficult.

When moving to a new house three major problems always arise - space, organization and sentimentality. Each of these problems can usually be solved by renting a storage unit and I’ll explain why.

Space
Does your new home have as much space as your old one? And I don’t mean just storage space, what about floor space too? The furniture that fit into your old home might not fit as well into your new home due the different layout. If you don’t have the space for all of your possessions, you might want to put them in storage until a time when you do have the space.

Organization
It takes time to arrange your new home. At first you’ll have boxes full of items which all need a new home. Until everything is properly packed away in the appropriate cupboards you wont be able to move for all the boxes you’ve brought. Because of this it can be beneficial to put some of your items in storage whilst you organize the rest of the house. This will give you space to work.

Sentimentality
Sentimentality is the mover’s worst enemy. It often gets in the way of people making a clean break. Making the decision to leave a house that has given you so many happy memories is hard enough, but items can carry the same sentimental value. You might have cupboards filled with items that have absolutely no use but hold a sentimental value. Do you really have space for these items? If you take everything you won’t have space for anything new. If these items are simply too precious to throw in the trash, you could stow them away in a storage unit.

The Time Delay Problem
Many people use storage units when there is time delay between the sale of their old home and the purchase of the new one. If you are temporarily living in rented accommodation or with relatives, it might not be worth fully unpacking and you probably wont have enough space for everything. Storage units become vital in these circumstances.

Of course storage units aren’t only useful when you are moving. Extra storage space can be used simply to make more room in your home, whilst spring-cleaning or simply to protect precious items from the damp conditions of your basement or attic.
