When you lock away your valuable items in a storage unit you want to be absolutely certain that they are safe. Our storage units are one hundred percent secure from theft and malicious damage. But some items are vulnerable in other ways. Delicate items such as paper, photographs and clothing can be damaged by extreme temperatures, damp conditions and other environmental effects. Fortunately, we offer a solution to this problem too.

Climate controlled units are air conditioned to ensure a constant temperature within. This makes them ideal for storing delicate items. Such as photographs discs/records, electronics, pictures, files, antiques and more.

But that’s not all. Our climate controlled units are also built inside an indoor finished building. This helps to keep them at a constant temperature. It also keeps them much cleaner and free of dust. With more doors protecting your items from the outside world, the environment inside of your storage unit should stay as clean as you left it. This also makes for increased security, as does extra lighting around the units.

If you are thinking of using one of our climate controlled storage units there a few things to take into consideration.

When deciding whether you need to use climate controlled storage you should consider the following:

1. Firstly, your geographical area. If you live in a changeable climate, temperature control will be more important. Climate controlled units are available at most of our locations.

Accessibility is always important too. If you need to have regular access to your storage unit, make sure that it is close by. All of our locations are chosen to be easily accessible to clients.

2. What will you be storing? Typically the items stored in this type of unit are valuable items such as antique furniture, art and musical instruments, electrical products such as computers, and sensitive items like videos, CDs and DVDs, and photographs. These items can all be damaged by changes in temperature and damp conditions. Wood can warp if stored incorrectly and photographs can fade. Pharmaceutical companies also use our climate controlled units for obvious reasons. Businesses have also found this to be the ideal way to store their archival documents. The lifespan of paper can be more than doubled when stored in the correct conditions.

3. Position. Is your storage unit on the first floor? If not, will you need an elevator to safely carry your inventory to your storage unit?

Of course, even the use of climate controlled storage cannot protect your items entirely. How you store the items can have a big effect too. So here are a few hints on how to get the best from your climate controlled storage unit and to help you keep your valuables in tip-top condition:

Keep boxes off of the floor. This will protect them from the possibility of accidental flooding. When boxes are elevated from the ground they will also benefit more from the climate control system, as air will flow more freely around them.

Cover items with dust sheets. The reasons for this are obvious. Even in a climate controlled unit dust can be a problem.

Stack boxes correctly. Make sure that heavy items are stored below lighter items so that they do not fall or damage the items below them.
