While most people out there understand the value of organic foods there are plenty of issues that have brought criticism to that industry. You have plenty of people that find nothing wrong with the conventional methods that have been in place for so long. They feel that people aren’t suffering ill effects from that process so why make a big deal about it. While they do admit that pesticides and other chemicals can be harmful if in large quantities they are confident in the processing they have to get rid of residue.

Some research shows that many organic foods aren’t grown with only organic fertilizers. They feel that this is false advertising and that it portrays the process as one that isn’t really as good at it is meant to seem. While this has been admitted it is suggested that what is used isn’t full of harmful chemicals which is why it wasn’t disclosed initially.

There is no secret that organically grown food costs more than conventional methods. For consumers that are already pushing the limit with what they pay for groceries they simply can’t afford to pay for anything additional. While they would love to buy organic foods they just can’t justify that additional cost into their budget. With the price of so many things increasing at the store that is definitely understandable. That additional cost can range from 10% to 40% than conventional food prices.

Many people don’t realize the first time that they shop for organic foods that they won’t last as long either. They rot faster due to the lack of preservatives that are placed on them as is done with conventional methods. That means by the time they are shipped to the store and you buy them you are running out of time to consume them. So not only are some people paying more for them but then they can’t get any value out of what they purchased.

The amount of land that is used to produce organic food is more than for conventional methods. This is a very strong criticism of the process because people are worried that to give more land for this type of production there are areas that have to be cleared away. The average yield for the same area of land is 20% less when you are talking about organic foods. What is the long term impact of doing so on the ecosystems that reside within them?

Some of the harshest of critics claim that organic foods are nothing but a balloon full of hot air. They feel that this is a strong marketing ploy to scare people into buying foods that are made without chemicals. They worry that too much false information about them is going around and they want to stop it dead in its tracks. This can certainly make it very confusing though for consumes to know what is really going on.

It is up to each consumer to decide what to think about the various criticisms about organic foods. Are there real problems that make this not such a good method of growing food? Perhaps the conventional food industry feels threatened so they want to shed a bad light on this part of the food market. According to the USDA organic foods are free of chemicals and they are good for you to eat.

Yet they don’t contain any additional vitamins or nutrients above other foods. Do you want to pay more for food that is good for the environment though? It really comes down to having the right information and then making a decision based on it that is right for your household.
